A what better way of summing this all up with one simple word, "Waste".
Multiple reasons why this who rig is a "waste".
1. Conroe, by the looks of things conroe will be wiping the floor with this system
2. AM2, possibly AMD will release a conroe competitor processor, screwing you over just as equally.
3. Raptor is a waste.
4. Should have gotten an X1900XT at the minimum
5. Processor speed really isn't that important in a gaming machine
6. You have no real reason to upgrade yet, your system was lagging behind already well over a year ago, the difference between your current system "lagging behind NOW and three-four months from now isn't even tangible" so why not wait? It's not like you can't play current games or anything
7. Expect this system to never be upgraded, because you're at the end of the upgrade cycle if you build this system.

What happened to feeling sick? OCing is quick and easy if you're not wanting to push it to the utter limit.Originally posted by: Trinitron

Exactly. I work in IT - I spend maybe 60-70 hours a week working with computers - the last thing I want to do is go home after a 10 hour day and "fiddle" with an over clocked, jazzed up system because I was too cheap to just spend the money and buy the good parts.
When the parts get here it will take me thirty minutes to assemble them and maybe two hours to load the OS and restore all my data - and that?s it, I won't touch this system for three or maybe four years after that (pending no parts go out).
<---- See the registration date. I was all about over clocking and getting the best price/performance six years ago, hell make that 16 years ago (got into computers in 1990). Now I am more about stability, ease of use, etc, etc.
I do like all the feedback though!
This post and the list item "7900GTX" are at odds with each other.Originally posted by: Trinitron

Who says I won't do some gaming? Everyone kept assuming I built this machine as a GAMING box, which I didn't. For the small ammount I will do (which is not the machines priority) the video code I chose will do just fine.

Building 1 complete 2.5k PC once every 3-4 years is far more efficient than upgrading all the time, if you do the math. I don't have the patience for that kind of an upgrade cycle, but hey. If you really were using your Barton and 9800 pro up until now, more to you. Regarding the vidcard, the diff between a $500 and a $200 card is pretty negligible if you're doing it like that. Amortize $300 over 4 years, then like who cares.
Also I don't think 6.1/7.1 speakers have any advantage over good 5.1's, maybe someone else can correct me on that.
