right. I bought the 3700+ not the FX57, why? $$$$. It OC'ed to the FX57, but it isn't quite the same.

Of course, having the money to buy the faster stuff means, well, the faster stuff can usually OC even farther ;) :D

ASUS A8N-SLI Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD Motherboard
Antec Performance I P180 Silver
2 GENERIC 18" 2-Head Red SATA
Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound
ZALMAN CNPS7700-CU
MITSUMI Black 1.44MB 3.5" Internal USB 2.0 digital card reader with Floppy Drive
Western Digital Raptor WD1500ADFD 150GB 10,000 RPM Serial ATA150
Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD4000KD 400GB 7200 RPM Serial ATA150 Hard Drive
CORSAIR XMS 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 433 (PC 3500)
Antec TRUEPOWERII TPII-550 ATX12V 550W Power Supply
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ Toledo 2000MHz
Creative SOUND BLASTER X-Fi Platinum 7.1 Channels PCI Interface Sound Card
BFG Tech BFGR79512GTXOCE Geforce 7900GTX 512MB GDDR3

A what better way of summing this all up with one simple word, "Waste".
Multiple reasons why this who rig is a "waste".
1. Conroe, by the looks of things conroe will be wiping the floor with this system
2. AM2, possibly AMD will release a conroe competitor processor, screwing you over just as equally.
3. Raptor is a waste.
4. Should have gotten an X1900XT at the minimum
5. Processor speed really isn't that important in a gaming machine
6. You have no real reason to upgrade yet, your system was lagging behind already well over a year ago, the difference between your current system "lagging behind NOW and three-four months from now isn't even tangible" so why not wait? It's not like you can't play current games or anything
7. Expect this system to never be upgraded, because you're at the end of the upgrade cycle if you build this system.

I know after spending $2500, the last thing i'd wanna hear is "waste", but i'd have to agree (for the most part). The conroe point, however, i wouldn't get too over zealous about, unless anyone has seen real, unbiased REAL WORLD peformance tests, we don't know how much it'll beat AMD's current offerings by. (I should state that, i think, at the VERY least, conroe will thrash Intel's current offerings, and most likely best AMD's by a margin, but not as high as Intel would like people to believe). Oh, and he can still upgrade video cards later on, or add a second one, so the upgrade path isn't completely blocked.

As for your build, i'd have gone with a 4400+ and an x1900xt, the performance difference would be negligable, and the price difference would be MUCH nicer. (Could have spent the money on a new monitor, if need be, or some better speakers to go with the X-Fi perhaps or hell, buy a gift for the girlfriend/wife (or buy a girlfriend/wife if you're so inclined, haha))

At the least, you'll definately love the system, your choices weren't wrong, just far from any real price/performance (which is what everyone loves).

Hah! I like some of the opinions listed here. You know what they say about those.

I don't recall mentioning this was a gaming rig. :)

Be happy with what you have, that is the important part. I am happy with what I have. :)

Exactly. I work in IT - I spend maybe 60-70 hours a week working with computers - the last thing I want to do is go home after a 10 hour day and "fiddle" with an over clocked, jazzed up system because I was too cheap to just spend the money and buy the good parts.

When the parts get here it will take me thirty minutes to assemble them and maybe two hours to load the OS and restore all my data - and that?s it, I won't touch this system for three or maybe four years after that (pending no parts go out).

<---- See the registration date. I was all about over clocking and getting the best price/performance six years ago, hell make that 16 years ago (got into computers in 1990). Now I am more about stability, ease of use, etc, etc.

I do like all the feedback though!

Hhahah everyone is just too cheap to afford the good stuff.. you stepped up and bought it.. its like the kids that drives a ford and wishing they got lexus.. you got a lexus and they're stuck with fords.. and now they're telling you u got a pos

Of course new procs will wipe the floor with the existing system but thats 3 month away, and maybe more

Keep telling your self the raptor is a waste.. on some level its over priced but hell, once this thing drop below 100 bucks, everyone is gonna buy it....

What the people who have bagged on you for NOT getting the 1900xt are forgetting to mention is that it also does double duty as a space heater. I know, I own one.

You should be able to slap in the GTX, set your tri-speed fans on low and be on your way. A nice cool and quiet system.

Don't listen to the party crashers. Buy whatever you want and don't look back.

I have ProMedia Ultra 5.1s at the moment. Now that I have a 7.1 card it may be time to upgrade!

Posting a thread like this is just an invitation to the have-nots to jump in and tell you how much your new property sucks.

What happened to feeling sick? OCing is quick and easy if you're not wanting to push it to the utter limit.

This post and the list item "7900GTX" are at odds with each other.

a 3800 x2 would have sufficed enough. x1900 would have been good too. Other than that I think your system is good to go.

I should prolly say i don't remember anyone saying your pc sucked, just the price. You could have had 95% of the performance at like 70% of the cost (just guesses, but the point remains). 'Course we're all jealous, you payed the premium price, you'll get premium performance. Oh, and a 7900GTX does sorta scream "gaming".

Who says I won't do some gaming? Everyone kept assuming I built this machine as a GAMING box, which I didn't. For the small ammount I will do (which is not the machines priority) the video code I chose will do just fine.

Building 1 complete 2.5k PC once every 3-4 years is far more efficient than upgrading all the time, if you do the math. I don't have the patience for that kind of an upgrade cycle, but hey. If you really were using your Barton and 9800 pro up until now, more to you. Regarding the vidcard, the diff between a $500 and a $200 card is pretty negligible if you're doing it like that. Amortize $300 over 4 years, then like who cares.

Also I don't think 6.1/7.1 speakers have any advantage over good 5.1's, maybe someone else can correct me on that.

Op you should have asked for more opnions on your system before buying. ALOT of people here are giving you more reasonable options, although you dont have to listen, i would have taken them into account.

Sometimes I think even 5.1 is overkill. It's disappointing how few movies really take advantage of my fronts. I'm loving my new Fluance center though :D
