Just set up an i3 2100 rig

I always laugh at those threads where people on 2000usd hardware struggle to run a game max out. Then they start giving each other advice do this and enable that and add that in the settings file etc etc. But theres always a bloke popping up in them with low budget hardware getting the best performance out of all of them lol
Theres always the x2 PC with a GTS 240 that maxes everything out lol

Note: He's running a monitor with 1600x900 resolution. The point remains though, an i3 & 6790 is enough to make the mainstream, fresh-off-the-console-boat gamer very happy. Also, I'd bet that "maxed out" for him just means "very high" but no AA/AF.

Just picked up a new Dell system for somebody, i3-2100 6GB RAM 1TB ATI 6450 Win7 64bit for $328 shipped after tax ect. I can't really compete with that kind of pricing, and its vastly better than the AthlonX2-3600+ it replaced. Amazing how much you can get for so little...

Those two you choke up your CPU,,, also make sure you put 8GB ram and turn off page file.

Drop in a 400w psu and a 9600 GT for 30 dollars.... gl :'(

Some games perform marginally better with a quad. One or two perform more than marginally better with a quad, but zero games require a quad.

I've seen zero games that max four cores. Games that "can make use of" a quad usually have pretty moderate loads on 3rd and 4th core to the point that 2 core + HT is not a major drawback. A drawback over 4 full cores, for sure, but not a major drawback.

He's got a Radeon 6790 1GB + 8GB of memory already...and a 700W PSU (because I had it laying around ).

Iv'e been playing BF3 on a oced e8200 at 3.2ghz and it bottlenecks a 6750 for christs sake .

Can only enter a map in the main base cause this rig takes about 20-30 secs for it to render and be half smooth before i could even move...any heavy firefights and its rape if i spawn there so i can say for certain this one requires one if you wanna play online.

No it doesn't. i am playing BF3 on a Core i3-2105 and it's fine.

Your will get a lot more performance by upgrading your video card than you will your CPU

It's tough to do custom builds these days and compete with the brand names, but I usually sell the point that they are boxed retail and carry anywhere from 3 years to lifetime warranty on any of the components.

I said intel could sell dog turds labeled as martian rocks before they could sell a overclockable dual core....i never said dual cores are turds so please reread that post.

When i mention dual core i mean like older 775 processors or ones that do not have ht enabled on them perhaps like the pentium g800 series or the celerons.

E8200 is old simple as that cpu is always peeking in the 96-100% range...when it pings 100% frames just drop.

No it doesn't. i am playing BF3 on a Core i3-2105 and it's fine.

Your will get a lot more performance by upgrading your video card than you will your CPU

Already planning a build around a 1090t and a gtx570 this card is a hold me over till i have the funds for my build in less then 2 weeks.

Try playing on a g860 pentium and tell me that will run fine...i know the i3 chips play it fine...anything with 4 threads and recent should have no problem at all .

That makes no sense at all. The K-less 2120 has Hyperthreading. Hyperthreading is the differentiator for i3's.

stock speed i3-2100 benches are absolutely fine on BF3 with a high end GPU. 2500k with both clock speed advantages and 2 extra cores usually only show like 2FPS better.

BF3 is a really bad example of a game that "needs" a quad.
It's actually an excellent example of where an overclocked 2C / 4T is the perfect choice. It's such a GPU bound game that an i3 @ 4.5 GHz would play the game perfectly and spending on a 2500k would just be wasted money (for that particular game) if a SB OCable dual were available.

A SB @ 4.5+GHz is a completely different class than an e8200 @ 3.2 GHz. The architecture offers 10-30% improvements, then 40% higher clocks... total 50-80% faster than the CPU you're using.
