I've never seen anything like the overrating of these Batman movies so these are far and away the most overrated movies of all time, IMO. I can't think of anything that even compares, accept maybe Star Wars which was just so bad, when fans were expecting so much. Nothing will ever match the kind of hype those movies had.
I'm actually a movie nerd and watch tons of movies. Like I said, this movie was good - maybe even very good but its not nearly as good (IMO of course) as nearly everyone else thinks it is. Which is why I like it when some people try and take it down a notch, at least not everyone loved it.
Movies I've seen recently I really liked = God Bless America. Very funny and something I would love to do. Get the beloved patriot was good, people hate Mel Gibson - I'm not one of those people. In fact one of his movies would make my top list, even top 3-4 movies of all time. Avengers was pretty good, still a little overrated but nothing like this Batman movie that is even more overrated than the second movie. I like the second movie better than this last one. Nothing will ever top Heath as the Joker in any comic book movie, ever.
There are things I like of each of the Nolan Batman films better than the others, as in... in some ways I think Batman Begins was best, but yet in many ways the other two get the nod. And honestly, I cannot even begin to describe how I've arrived at that conclusion - it's more of a personal feeling than a critical dissection.
But I also think the Nolan Batman films are getting the "over-hype" coverage and opinions is not because a lot of us think these films are "omg the best movies evar!!"... rather, we see them in the light of all movies that have come before in in the same genre. Essentially, we are comparing them to other comic book films - and in that, a lot of us can agree, they are some of the best comic book movies out there, especially in regards to their substance/style.
I personally think Iron Man is one of the greatest comic book movies too - but it's almost entirely different; if you like a dark and gritty comic book movie, Nolan's Batman series is, imho, absolutely the best the genre has seen.
As for The Dark Knight, even outside of the comic-book genre, that movie definitely deserves praise imho - simply because of the overall movie, and most certainly because Heath Ledger's Joker.
As a method actor, after you see just how well he got into that character, it's no wonder he went off the deep end (accidental or not - I don't doubt he got himself into quite a mess for that character). Honestly, purely in terms of acting and character (removing the comic book notions), it was one of the best portrayals of a villain ever filmed.
For Nolan in general - yes, dammit, I think he needs to stop the "3 hour movie" trend. It's okay every now and then, and I've enjoyed every movie of his that I have watched... but sometimes it takes away from the idea of repeat viewings, especially if any part of a movie feels like it drags a little too long.
I wouldn't classify him as a "best of Hollywood - give him every award possible" type of director/writer, but his non-Batman movies I've all equally enjoyed and have viewed multiple times. Memento? The Prestige? Inception? Check, check, check.
I am actually quite anxious to see what his next project will be (one that he helms. as he only gets partial writing credit for Man of Steel - and I'll probably skip that anyway since I've never liked Superman).
