Well . . . I saw the movie, so I feel that I can weigh in.
In some aspects, the movie was like the game - in others, it wasn't. Whereas the game featured only one or two people against hordes of zombies, this was more like "Aliens" with zombies. That was fine, because the games, to me, had that cheezy atmosphere that most stuff that's been translated into English from Japanese seems to get. 😉 One annoyance was the way that the team burned through their ammo shooting zombies in the legs and chest, and only had a pistol with 16 rounds left when they figured out to shoot them in the head - duh. That's something my dad learned in boot camp - "Two in the chest, one in the head, will make a guy lay down dead."
I don't get the gripes about the cinematography being too much like the Matrix. Yeah, there were a couple of homages, but for the most part the cinematography was very, very good, and very stylish. I liked it quite a bit. The movie also did not seem loud to me.
As far as the acting goes - Romero's Dawn of the Dead is regarded as a modern classic, and the acting was a hell of a lot better in Resident Evil. I had no problem there.
The ending was spec-frickin-tacular. John Carpenter would have been proud. 😀 I love movies that end like that. They also set it up perfectly for the sequel.
By no means does this get classified as a modern classic, but it was very entertaining and creepy.
