It is illegal to do that in Virginia too... But don't think it is enforced that much here.

Get caught doing that around here and its a reckless driving ticket.

4 point ticket (10 to lose your license) and a hefty fine.

I was gonna say "Remind me to bomb (insert your town here)" ... but I think that might be crossing the line.

With that post (and probably this quote too ;)) M4H sets off alarm bells in the FBI, and they come hunt down your ass for mentioning the b word!

And, that sux0rs, mAdMaLuDaWg! What did you tell the cop, then? Not the truth, i hope

Confused

I made up a stupid story like I didn't know the area as I've never been down to this road before... I was going to find a U-Turn then I saw a sign to the highway and decided to go. (I know it was stupid, but I was really nervous as I've never been pulled over b4 and didn't know what else to say)

Two points? Damn, they don't play around with that... But it was listed under parking and other violations?

It should have listed the statute that you violated, do you have that number? What state are you in? Have you checked the statute yourself?

I'd try for deferred adjudication if possible.

Its dangerous because its a parking lot and not the street. If eveyrone who was turning right went though the parking lot it would cause congestion in an area where people are not expecting road like conditions.

The point isn't that you endangered people or anything, the point is that the street is for traveling and the parking lot is for parking. It's ok for one or two people, but if everyone in the traffic jam went through it would be a mess. The only way to stop everyone from going through the lot is to make it illegal. If its illegal it has to be enforced. It sucks that you have to be the example, you might be able to get some leanancy (sp?) by going to court, but i would definatly avoid trying to say that you changed your mind about going to the store. Nobody will be fooled and its not a good idea to treat your judge like he/she is an idiot.

If you have a clean record, it's a safe bet that they'll let you plead guilty to a different charge with no points.

Generally it is not well enforced here unless it is a well known spot and the property owners complain about it or if it is Fairfax County where they live to pick nits.

NJ LAW:

39:4-66.2 Driving on public or private property to avoid a traffic sign or signal 2 Points

Ouch~! I would fight that if I where you. If its your first offense then fight it. Request the time to talk to the prosecutor. The judge will likely ask all that request time to speak to the prosecutor to stand in a line on the side of the court room , then they'll escort you to talk to the prosecutor in a back room with the convicting officer . Just explain you where lost or had a last minute change in mind. They'll likely bargain with you that they'll knock off the points if you just paid a fine of some sort. So just make sure you bring a check book.

Guys you do not want to plea guilty to a ticket in NJ, specially not with Auto Insurance this bad. That violation on your record and at your young age could likely make your insurance premium go sky high.

The only time I would plea guilty to a ticket is when I'm in a accident that involves witness's and a victims wrecked car that I'm liable for.

Likely because you have a lot less driving accidents then the crap drivers we have here in NJ ;) .

I'm looking at this violation chart and it blows my mind on what things I could of got slapped with. Specially thinking of myself as a careful driver.

1. Driving through safety zone
2. Failure to yield to overtaking vehicle
3. Improper passing of frozen dessert truck (4 points!) Damn kids!
4. Failure to stop vehicle before crossing sidewalk

I don't see why it's retarded. Why should you be able to skirt a light while everyone else waits in line, and do it at the expense of a private landowner?

It's awfully hard to enforce, but I wouldn't want you driving across my lawn just so you can save 2 minutes, and someone who owns a place with a parking lot probably feels the same way.

Very good. I would ask around town. My town's judicial courthouse just wants you to pay the fine more than to issue you DMV points. That officer likely expects you to fight it any how, no officer wants to give a kid points in NJ unless he is either that much of a dick or because he thought you where driving reckless enough to earn them.

You have 2 choices,
1. You admit you did something wrong and you do the responsible thing by accepting whatever punishment you're given.

2. You can lie about it and try to cheat the system.

Whatever fits YOU the best. Some people have no problems with lying. You just have to ask yourself if you you're one of those people.

Whatever category that will get me no points is the one I'm in ;)
Now, the problem I have is to figure out what category that is.

Dude, if the officer is in the court, tell the truth, and say that you didn't know it was illegal. If he is not, tell them the mail drop story. Fvcking the system will feel so good, try it.

Viper,

Depending on how many people cut thru the lot it can severely hamper business because your store's parking lot becomes a jam packed mess so it's a PITA for customers to enter/exit which means they will just go someplace else. Plus all the people trying to "beat the light" are driving aggressively so accidents become common place. I've worked at two places (gas stations/convience stores) where people would cut thru our parking lot to get around the intersection. Accidents easily happened on a weekly basis and, espeically during rush hour, it was a royal PITA to get into/out of our lot because of everyone cutting thru. Hell, if it was between 4:30pm and 7pm I wouldn't even shop at my own store. I'd rather pass-up my employ discount then fight to get into and out of my work. Nobody wants to shop someplace where they are afraid of getting into a car accident in the stores parking lot.

That's a pretty bunk ticket. Sounds like the cops in your town are like the town clowns from mine, in that they have nothing better to do than issue petty traffic tickets.

I completely understand why people shouldn't do it, & I'm not advocating it.

I am not, however, specifically aware of any Oregon statutes forbidding it.

If they exist (which they may), they are not heavily enforced. I have not heard of anyone being ticketed for it.

Legality aside, it would be exceptionally difficult to enforce.

There are hundreds of perfectly legitimate reasons for entering and subsequently exiting a parking lot without entering the store.
