Just received a summons today for Passing through Private Property to avoid a traffic signal... advice.

A cop caught me cutting through a parking lot to avoid a signal :|:Q
I have to appear in court next week (and guess what day it is.. NOVEMBER 5th; out of all the days it had to be the day Revolutions was coming out!!!!!!) to make a plea.
This is my first traffic violation and so I'm wondering whats best to say to the judge so that he lets me go off the hook. BTW, I live in NJ.

is that a parking lot of a store? maybe you can tell the judge that you were going to go in to buy something but changed your mind in a split second, so you didnt even get out of the car, and drove on. some BS like that.

the best thing to say to the judge? "I'm sorry your honor! it wont happen again!"

just pay the fine/ticket and plead guilty. you should get court supervision.

That's why I always pull into a parking spot for just a second and then get out of there. If I get caught, I'll just tell them I had to pull over for a second to sneeze or something to that effect. Works everytime for my friends.

More Details:
Heading down to the highway. The intersection near my house was jammed with traffic as usual. Went down to the second intersection, jammed again. Went down to the third one, jammed but there was a Pathmark parking lot that let me cut through the traffic light. I did, cop pulled me over.
Thats it.

Wondering if there are any points that are going to be added for this violation... thats what I'm worried about, not the fine!

i'd have to say my advice would be to wait thru the lights next time.
thats not only stupid to cut through, its dangerous. theres a reason is against the law.

yeah right, don't plead guily. Don't fess up! If he caught you after you left the lot, then you might be in trouble. If he caught you in the middle of the lot then just say you were going to the supermarket. I do this all the time but i've never gotten caught. I really don't think it would be too bad of a ticket though.

Viper, I see you post in all these ticket threads, and always you don't know what is legal/illegal. I sure hope you don't drive my way. Just kidding. My mom got a ticket for doing that just before I got my driver's license. Thus I've never done that. You are right though, most cops won't enforce it - they have bigger problems to tackle. I think your advice may work, but likely if the cop shows up to court, you are screwed, mADMaLuDaWg.

Why is it dangerous? The exit I went through was a legit exit from the shopping complex with a stop sign. Its not dangerous at all, perhaps clever and against the law, but not dangerous. I've been doing it all the time every morning, I didn't really know it was against the law... well, now I know and it won't happend again.

Dude did you cut through the parking lots' lots, or through the driveway? Did you stop at the Stop Sign? Yes? Then you don't get a ticket damn it. When will people learn to challenge the system... Can't you tell the damn judge that you thought you needed something from Pathmark, entered their lot, then remembered your girlfriend already bought it for you, and just got out of the lot? ... well, in my experience seeing people doing it. its very dangerous, because they cut thru a parking lot @ 30 mph completely oblivious to anyone walking in the lot or other cars that may be backing out or driving correctly thru the parking lot.
that is why it is illegal and dangerous.
