How the fuck is the dude stupid?! It's called reflexes! You ever touch a hot stove? Your hand jerks itself away before your brain even registers that it was hot.

who said it was stupid?

Well, he was working on a hot stove, had a steak knife in his hand pointed at himself. I think that's a pretty fucking dumb thing to do.

Sucks for his kids and family :(

I started to think last night how this could have been prevented. Any ideas? One idea was to use a bullet proof vest while using the knife to cut things.

Use blunt-nosed kitchen knives. I can't think of a reason why we need sharp-pointed kitchen knives. When was the last time you needed to thrust into some vegetables or meat?

This is the exact same thing I said last night. Why in the world do we need a pointed, extremely sharp tip like those found on knives.

Are blunt nose knives easy to find?

they are more expensive. if you're poor, the cheapest knives at the dollar store are the pointy ones

If he's holding the knife like that he's also facing it upwards at times. I yell at my wife all the time to not hold knives facing upward while walking to the table, etc. One mis-step and up it goes right into your face.

Bread knives aren't pointy. Why can't those be used?

It's the same reaction that almost got my hand slices open. i was working with one of those 7" blades on some meat and i dropped it. Well stupid me grabbed for it, of course the blade not the handle. Left me a nice mark, but no gushers, let go in another reflex second when i felt skin tearing as the blade bit into my hand. Reflexes suck some times :(. My condolences :(

Imagine you're a righty and you hold the knife in your right hand like one would hold a sword. You reach for something with this hand because you know you can grip that "something" and grip the knife at the same time. But that something turns out to be hot and your hand recoils back towards your body... this backwards motion to your body changes the direction of the knife from away from you to towards you. Try this with something like a pen and you'll see that it can be pretty easy to do.

Wow, I just tried that with a pen. I jerked my left hand back very quickly and my right, pen holding hand, jerked back with it naturally. Creepy.
