Super slow? There has to be a problem, I run D2 at around 400FPS and no that's no exaggeration.
And in the video options try with the Isometric view, I think it's disabled by default, it gives a semi-3D perspective giving the illusion of polygons rather than mere sprites. It's still 2D but it's better that way in my opinion. And if you're using an LCD monitor then maybe it's why playing at 800x600 that you can't see a thing. I don't know how LCDs nowadays can cope with very low resolutions, I've never owned an LCD so I cannot say, I'm alright with my CRT right now.
It's not that it runs slowly (FPS are fine) it's the loading. It takes a good minute to start and another 30 seconds to load a game. Also, occasionally while underground it will slow to a crawl during combat but restarting the games fixes it.
Did I mention this is on Vista Business 64-bit... (16-bit game? -> 32-bit wrapper->64-bit wrapper)
It's doing the 3-D thing which is slick enough but the view area is just tiny and you can't tilt or move the view to see better.

Whoever told you Dungeon Siege is like Diablo was lying his ass off.
Get Titan Quest, its ten times better but none of the elitist fanboys will admit it.
The only thing out there that even resembles Dungeon Siege is Dungeon Siege II, and I didnt care much for it.
There are aspects that are very similar (magic items are blue, the prefix and suffix add specific features, shops work the same, carrying and equipping items is the same).

i take it you havent been into pc gaming very long
I've gamed since Commander Keen and One Must Fall were king but not full-time like some. I tend to find a few good games and play them thoroughly but not pick up new games very often - not that I don't play new games; my most recent have been Oblivion and Supreme Commander. Then I went back to
Stars! (1996 or so?) and now Diablo II.

Didn't the expansion pack allow for higher resolutions?
Also, try some of the other video modes. I think it has ddraw, direct3d, and glide. (glide might be runnable with a wrapper)
Is this true? Google told me Blizzard fixed the resolution to prevent "cheating" online via higher resolutions.
