Just picked up Diablo II at Meijer's

I really enjoyed Dungeon Siege and heard several times that it was a lot like Diablo II so I figured I'd try it.

1. I didn't realize it was so old
2. It's stuck at 800x600 and you can't see anything
3. The view is horrible
4. It's super slow even on a modern computer and buggy

Kind of disappointing. 🙁

Hrm, my D2 runs like butter, and I can see everything perfectly.

If you aren't playing online, there a mods to make the game run at higher resolutions.

Super slow? There has to be a problem, I run D2 at around 400FPS and no that's no exaggeration.

And in the video options try with the Isometric view, I think it's disabled by default, it gives a semi-3D perspective giving the illusion of polygons rather than mere sprites. It's still 2D but it's better that way in my opinion. And if you're using an LCD monitor then maybe it's why playing at 800x600 that you can't see a thing. I don't know how LCDs nowadays can cope with very low resolutions, I've never owned an LCD so I cannot say, I'm alright with my CRT right now.

Can you point out one such mod? I know I've looked before.

Didn't the expansion pack allow for higher resolutions?
Also, try some of the other video modes. I think it has ddraw, direct3d, and glide. (glide might be runnable with a wrapper)

Whoever told you Dungeon Siege is like Diablo was lying his ass off.

Get Titan Quest, its ten times better but none of the elitist fanboys will admit it.

The only thing out there that even resembles Dungeon Siege is Dungeon Siege II, and I didnt care much for it.

i suggest you give diablo 2 a little more time before you judge it..

the resolution issue is a definite minus but the game is still really good..the combat is fun

i never have fps issues onthe game either..

you might try running it in a different video mode

It's not that it runs slowly (FPS are fine) it's the loading. It takes a good minute to start and another 30 seconds to load a game. Also, occasionally while underground it will slow to a crawl during combat but restarting the games fixes it.

Did I mention this is on Vista Business 64-bit... (16-bit game? -> 32-bit wrapper->64-bit wrapper)

It's doing the 3-D thing which is slick enough but the view area is just tiny and you can't tilt or move the view to see better.

There are aspects that are very similar (magic items are blue, the prefix and suffix add specific features, shops work the same, carrying and equipping items is the same).

Negative, but funny nonetheless. 🙂

i take it you havent been into pc gaming very long

I've gamed since Commander Keen and One Must Fall were king but not full-time like some. I tend to find a few good games and play them thoroughly but not pick up new games very often - not that I don't play new games; my most recent have been Oblivion and Supreme Commander. Then I went back to Stars! (1996 or so?) and now Diablo II.

Is this true? Google told me Blizzard fixed the resolution to prevent "cheating" online via higher resolutions.

Back in the day, companies fixed the res so everyone was on a level playing field during online play. It was extremely common in these types of games as well as RTS games. 1024x768 was the highest theyd usually allow you to go.

Yeah, too old now. Titan Quest is much better. Go grab that instead.

Diablo II is a fun game but if you want better graphics and more playing options, WoW is the way to go. The downside is WoW cost $15 a month to play but is worth it in my opinion. There are a lot of similarities between WoW and Diablo II.

I enjoy D2 much more than WoW... specially the whole not-having-to-pay-to-play mode. I guess there are some comparisons to be made between WoW and D2, but at the same time, you can compare pretty much any RPG to them... I'd say they're completely different games.

I honestly don't understand why so many people loved Diablo 2 either. I went out and bought it a while back, and it wasn't any better than the original. Don't get me wrong, I liked the original, but it had flaws (In my opinion) that the second game didn't really fix. It is nice to be able to go to different cities unlike the first game, but the actual gameplay didn't change much at all. I found the first game to be better if only because it was new, and by the time the second game came out I was already burned out on that type of game play, and I expected better graphics and effects in a modern game too.

At the time it was special.
8 years later after most folks have logged 1000+ hours on it, the game is no longer special.

I was saying that even at the time it wasn't anything special. Maybe I expected too much, but it seems like a rehash of the first game. More like an expansion than a sequel. I did finish it a couple of times, so I eventually got into it; but I remember thinking, "what is so special about this" when I first started playing it. I only finished it later when I didn't have any other games to play.
