Fvck you. I don't find that amusing in the least. She's one of the only good things that I got out of the relationship.

Oh come on, it was a joke. I'm sorry to hear that your sense of humor has died- my condolences.

I'm a dog person, I love dogs. But I'm not one of those nutty Peta-type people that can't take a joke about animals.
Neither am I. However, I do find it offensive when I'm talking about a serious situation (should have known better-yet again-to do that on ATOT) that had a tremendous negative affect on my life. (Not the leaving part, but the relationship part.) He has almost everything except what little I shipped, my dog, and ME. My dog has helped me through some rough times. Even kidding about selling her lets me know what kind of a person you are and has nothing to do with my sense of humor.

Congrats on the new car and the job.

Even if the car has been treated right still plan to spend a few hundred within the next few months for a tuneup and things like filters, belts hoses etc.. Then maybe look into a transmission flush, spark plugs, and tires pretty soon depending on frequency of service.

no disrespect but that is a lot of wasted money. Old car, repair when broken.

Some things should be checked by a good-willing professional - so the car won't let you on the road. Driving with three out of four spark plugs is possible (I've did it once), but a broken belt or cracked hose will stop you until fixed (or damage the car). Anyway, fixing them when they break is usually cheaper

I'm glad to see that things continue to look up for you.. You're back in Cali, aren't you?

Oh, and I, too, agree that a good dog is priceless..

Ugh, I feel like I'm dealing with someone who has the emotional intelligence of a 14 year old. It doesn't surprise me that you find yourself in these situations.

John - Yup, I'm back in California. Back in great weather! lol

91TTZ - I'm sorry for you that you find my love for my dog and my problem with my situation to be emotionally immature, but I don't care. I am what I am. If you don't like me, you don't have to "talk" to me here or anywhere else.

Good to hear about your improved situation hzl eyed grl

Change the oil/filter, check the fluids, belts, tire air pressure and be sure to check the spare. Then go for a decent ride on the freeway, 150 miles or so. That'll be good for it.

The smell is probably because Granny just used this car for short trips and never got it up to full working temperature. You might want to look under the car at the catalytic convertor, sometimes a plastic bag can get stuck to them and stink to high heaven.
If one is present, cut it with a razor and remove it.

Feel free to PM me into any car thread you might post. I don't know everything but will offer my best. Oh! Change your wiper blades, we are in a mild El Nino and we just might have a very wet Winter here on the west coast.

As for my car (90,000 miles when bought), as I had no info on late maintenance, I've changed oil, air and oil filter, and the belt that moves the cam shaft (and its foller/tensioner) (my engine has an overhead camshaft). And after driving in three cylinders, I've changed the sparks (all of them - but only one was a necessity).
That belt had some 20,000 miles of life on it usually, and the roller/tensioner has about twice. Gasoline engines will stop on broken belt - but diesel engine usually broke themselves (the pistons can hit the valves)
If the fact that your car brokes with you in it, and you need it towed is no big trouble, just have the belt checked (crankshaft to camshaft).
Also, ask someone to check the "play" in wheels - if they can wobble, driving could get dangerous.

Another (pretty good) point of view, expressed before: don't repair anything until something is broken. Works pretty good too :D

Not true. Gasoline engines can be interference engines, too. Most newer cars are intereference, meaning that if your timing belt breaks, your engine is toast.

If you look on this link, they list the 1.6L engine in the 1989 Summit as being an interference engine, meaning when the timing belt snaps, your pistons will most likely hit the valves.

Really bad advice. The problem with interference engines is that the problem will cascade from just a broken belt to a destroyed engine in about .05 seconds. No time to repair it between those events.

I've found that it has stopped smelling as badly. I think not using the heater for a long time had something to do with it. After my first paycheck I'll start to get things checked out. :)

Galvanized - Thank you. I appreciate it.

Oh and Jean. . .LOL! You know it.
