And now the Top Gun theory of Tom Cruise movies. Every Crusie movie is basically a version of Top Gun where Tom is the best at whatever he does.

Guess I have more I need to watch to see if the theory holds. ;)

.

Collateral - Top Assassin. :awe:

Robert DeNiro, one of the greatest actors ever, plays basically the same role in every movie. How many actors have a ton of range?

I don't think that is true. Take, for instance, the Deer Hunter and then Taxi Driver. While Bob might have been sort of type cast as the hard ass, efficient dude in a lot of his later roles, he has the range to do more. He just happens to be so good in a single role, people want him to play it.

Leonardo Dicaprio shits on all 3 of them for breakfast. Especially as he's aged. He is a good actor.

DiCaprio is great until he opens his mouth.

DeNiro has skills, but they don't match up to his rep, and he's gotten lazy.

Pitt is probably properly rated. Very good, nearly great. Probably about equal to Penn.

Oldman, DDL, and McKellen are on a completely different level.

It's crazy how many characters Gary Oldman has played throughout his career. Just look at him in Dracula, he plays it perfect and compare it to his other movies, he's awesome.

And I've already talked about DDL in the movie thread, he's probably one of the top ten actors of all time in any generation. His range is great, he makes long movies not feel as long. He can take anything that's given to him.

I'm still amazed that was Gary Oldman playing Drexl the pimp in True Romance. Really awesome performance.

DDL is probably the greatest living actor. He inhabits his characters in a way no one else possibly can.

I'm not a big fan of Gangs of New York as a movie; but try to imagine anyone else playing the role of William "Bill the Butcher" Cutter! Also had amazing performances in There Will Be Blood and Lincoln. I need to watch some more DDL movies...

A great actor, compared to whom?

I have seen more terrible actors than Tom Cruise, but if you're going to call Tom Cruise a great actor, then a tonne of soap stars deserve oscars.

An example of Tom Cruise's "great acting", check out his impression of drunkenness in "A Few Great Men". I don't know about you, but I've never seen a drunk person act that way. I can't think of any human state that looks like that either.

At the risk of repeating myself:

Tom Cruise is a great actor, PERIOD.
Why else would he be making so much money?

He really has been in a lot of good films.

I don't really care about him being crazy; he's a pretty good actor.

I think he's a decent actor, not great. I disagree with the no range comments. It's a limited range, but it's there. The characters in Edge of Tomorrow and Oblivion did feel like two different people when I watched them both recently, and not just because his Top Role was different.

He and/or his agents are also pretty good at picking parts that he can do.

Why would anyone spend so many hours watching someone play pretend, someone who doesn't give a single damn about you? With an average time of 2 hours per movie, that's more than two days of disturbingly wasted time. lol

Holy crud:

For the record, I have seen Rain Man and Risky Business, both were excellent performances.

Why would anyone spend this much time reading and writing things on the inter tubes?

"Wasted" compared to what? Most of those are generally better movies than the overwhelming majority of movies.
