it's a good song, but anyone who was "blown away" would've been blown away even if the song was maynard throwing a steaming handful of feces in his face.

Vicarious could've been an unremarkable tune off Lateralus, plain and simple.

So a Tool song sounds a lot like other Tool songs, and suddenly it can't be great?

What do you listen to, if I may ask.

Trip Hop. And?

First of all, I didn't quote you.
Second, I don't know what the hell you just said.

like i said, it's a good song, but it can't be a great song if it doesn't have its own identity. Vicarious sounds like Schism and The Patient mashed together with a dash of extra synchopation. what songs that are considered universally great (as much as an opinion can be universal) sound incredibly similar to tunes previously released by the artist? does anyone say that Stairway to Heaven is a great song b/c Zep slightly tweaked an older song and gave it a new name?

and i'm not sure how it applies, but i listen to 90% metal these days, but was raised on grunge. classic rock, and blues.

pantera, lamb of god, dillinger escape plan, dog fashion disco, all that remains, pig destroyer, children of bodom, every time i die, in flames, byzantine, deftones, stone temple pilots, incubus, alice in chains, soundgarden, john mayall, allman brothers, led zeppelin, etc

Interestingly enough, I listen to most of that and I still think this is a great song. Maybe it's just because I started listening to Tool only a month ago.

Same here.

This crap sounds like the Doom 3 soundtrack.

APC and Tool do not sound the same except for Maynard's voice...

I'm looking forward to hearing this, Lateralus was the last major label record that I purchased and it was well worth it. Don't forget folks, music is a subjective thing, and while Tool is generally held if fairly high regard for their prowess at writing complex rock songs with technical rhythms, it may not be your cup of tea. Knowing that, why post in this thread? I wouldn't even click on a Joan Baez thread. ;)

Viacarious sounds like it was an extra from the Lateralus album. It's not bad, but it's not a new style.

Y'all who say it sounds bad need to heed the warnings of many bands who say that the quality of internet leak downloads are often not representative of the finished product you can buy. They're right. I have the .flac version and it's great. But it's possible it was already compressed for FM. Which is how it was found. Some tardbait at the label left the FTP site (for radio stations to download from) unprotected and another person found it. I read this from t.d.n

Wait for the release and listen to it again before making sweeping generalizations.

And listen to it on a hi fi FFS. Your computer setup can't do music justice. Probably.

There's this chick at a long haul trucker forum I visit. She is an owner/operator. She has never driven for a company. Yet, she pops in on threads with questions about how a company truck is built or how a company does business. She lets us know that "she's never driven for a company so she wouldn't know the answer".

WTF, over?
