I just had my interview at 3:00 pm today. I can tell you it wasen't a normal interview as they didn't ask the typical interview questions like tell me about yourself etc....

The office was very laid back. Like jeans and shirt type of thing. The two peple who were on my interview panel were the director of IT and a senior dba admin. The director of IT was asking me a lot of little personal and behavioral based questions.

1. What got you in IT. (he started talking about his 17 yo daughter and how she changes her major every couple of semester)

2. What was your most interesting class and most challenging class?

3. What made you come to X etc..... Where are you from etc...

The DBA was asking me a lot of pointy DBA related questions like what are joins, unions, etc....

The DBA tested my knowledge directly

At the very end of the questioning the both of them asked "is there anything we don't know from you that we need to know" (after and hour). I said you pretty much covered everything. They said yeah. "We make a pretty tough interview because we want to make sure we know who we are hiring".

He also said when they made the job title they put a lot of crazy shit in the min requirements. He said that if he were to hire someone with all those min qualification he would have to pay them more then 100K but that's not his plan. He wanted someone that has knowledge of some and he can teach the rest. He said that I was very qualified for the position.

The director said he has to go through the whole interview pool because it seems I was the first they interviewed. The DBA guy was taking me out of the building and said he dosen't know what will happen but there is another database s job that has similar qualifications and if there is any problem he will consider me for that one as well.

So how do you know if you got hired or not. There seem to be signs that I did and seem to be signs that they might pass over me....

When you get a job offer you have the option of being an employee, until then who knows.

It sounds like you did well, and you have a good chance, but who knows what the other candidates are like.

A) that doesn't sound all THAT tough of an interview....go through the interview loop at one of the big software companies on the west coast, now THOSE are hard
B) you don't know if you got hired until they tell you. you can try to pick up on signs all you want, but you never know what they actually thought

Make sure that you write them thank you letters or emails.

And when you get the job, turn their shitty ass on demand service around please. Thanks :)

You should send a thank you letter re-emphasize your qualifications for the job. That is what I would do. Address it to both the director of IT and the senior DBA admin.

Outside of ATOT, I have never heard of sending "thank you" letters for a job interview.

In my experience if not hired on the spot after a lengthy interview there is no call back.

I wouldn't count on it but like others said continue follow up until they tell you you're not getting it.

YMMV Good luck

Now granted I'm only a year out of college, but I've received 5 or 6 full time offers and a dozen or so internship offers in my life, and only one of them gave the offer on the spot. Usually I got a letter or email, sometimes a phone call (followed by a letter).

The problem with being the first one interviewed is that by the end of the process they may forget how good you were.

Are you kidding me? It's like one of the most successful things you can do make sure you at least get some kind of offer or another round of interviews.

For some of the larger companies, there are policies and procedures in place to prevent this from happening. (Equal employment laws and such)

I have always been notified by phone/email/mail if I have received a job offer.

I've never offered anyone a job on the spot, but I've had a pretty good idea after the interview that I would be extending an offer.

If you're the man for the job, they would have found out you're the man at the interview. Sending them a thank you note to reemphasize your qualification sounds needy and pushy, and weak. Might as well send them a youtube video of yourself crying and begging on your knees for the job.
