Just had a thought.... Microsoft doesn't have an anti-virus tool...

i dunno, they have zip, backup, firewall, cd burning... seems like just about everything, with the release of xp. yet no anti-virus... *shrug* wonder why.

Maybe because those other things are one-hit costs. While antivirus software requires updates of virus defs. They would have to pay Symantec or whoever subscription fee. With the current things they include, they just pay an upfront license probably per copy sold to Roxio and Symantec for their technologies.

Once, long ago, they had one. And I think it was about as good as their OSes.

If an OS bugs out, but 99% of the people use it, you just tell them to get the next version instead when that's released, and they have no clue about other possibilities. When you bring a sh!tty virusscanner on the market while there are quite a lot of good ones already, it's a bit harder to gain a monopoly position.

Yeah I guess they learned their lesson and started licensing Symantec (SpeedDisk and Doctor) and Diskeeper stuff to make scandisk and defrag.

The XP and WMP burning capabilities are licensed from Roxio, so they probably work as well as CD Creator, but I wonder how well the firewall works since it was built in-house.
