Hah wait til you try a Kobe filet. You can never go back.

Honestly dude, I don't see it. You're eating in effect 60-70% fat. Your lips will taste like grease.

I would split an 8oz filet with 4 people.

Not to mention you'd be dropping what? 40-80/oz?

//edit

oops, meant to edit not quote, my bad

//editx2

actually alot cheaper than I expected. prices from a top LA steakhouse (including kobe)

Text

That is my favorite restaurant in LA. The 6oz American Kobe filet is $60 and is worth EVERY PENNY. And you'll be full. The oxtail bouillon is awesome too.

haha, it's on my list of places to go. The only thing I can't stand is their recockulous reservation system (530 or 10 unless you have many 0's in your bank account)

I know, it's retarded. The only way I am able to get an 8:30 reservation is through my friend who works at William Morris Agency.

Celeb sightings whenever I go though. Saw Henry Winkler last time (the Fonz) and Jessica Alba the time before.

Odd. My friend is on the team selling the william morris building.

Hah that looks way good, same as what I had?

If it was really 17 bucks it better damn well be USDA prime

It was choice. Prime is over $30/lb at the place I bought this. I bet some places would call this prime though.

Ready to go on the grill

wtf? what does costco charge for it? (i haven't actually purchased filet @ costco)

actually that sounds about right. i think i paid some 17 or 18/lb for prime ribeye.

Just a tip for you. Don't be cutting the steaks like that when you're cooking them, all the juices drain out. Just let them rest on a plate for 10 minutes when they are 5-10 degrees below your liking. Since you're trying to learn get used to poking the meat with your finger as that will tell you how done they are. Get yourself a thermometer and you can use that as well until you get the feel for it.

Filet mignon is good, but like any meat, you have to make sure you don't over grill it.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. I still need to get a thermometer. The edges where I cut turned out well done. Still good though!

Yeah I was surprised, my local Stop & Shop had the 5.5-ounce Filet Mingon steaks, 3 for $15. USDA Prime, Certified Angus Beef too! Hey, it's cheaper than a Big Mac ;)

wow, that meat in that picture gallery from that restruarant is pretty marbled up, I bet that would be good. I wonder though if too much fat could actually be overwhelming.

I took that pic after it was on the plate and took my first bite. I never cut into a steak while cooking it.

Well, he didn't quote the person he was referring to. I thought he could have been talking to me because the pic I posted had been cut into.

Now that you've tried that, find a local butcher and you'll be amazed at the difference.

Are you kidding?? That piece of meat was THE best steak I have ever tasted in my life. It tasted like it was already marinated with sauce from heaven. All I did was add salt and pepper!

filets definitely are good... but jonk is right, they aren't the most flavorful. Don't get me wrong, I love a filet, nothing beats the tenderness IMO, but you almost have to marinate them to really enjoy them. Fat is where the flavor is.

Does frozen meat taste pretty close to fresh meat? It'd be nice to buy meat in bulk (no pun intended) and fill a storage freezer full. I already do that with frozen veggies & my countertop steamer.

It's not that bad, but definitely not the same. But then again, I usually don't throw em on the grill after freezing...

We buy shortribs in bulk @Costco. Use some, freeze the rest. After braising they become tender as shit anyway

Yeah plus it's nice to marinate overnight anyway, so having to dethaw is just a plus. My goal is fast meals + great-tasting meals + short-term food storage (less shopping, more convenience).
