Just got yelled at at the video store

I rented a DVD last night at it wouldn't load. Went back and got another one and it skipped. The third one finally worked.

I mentioned to the store manager that before I brought the bad ones back I washed them with dish detergent and dried them by laying them flat on a paper towel.

She said that you should NEVER do that and not to do it again.

I clean all my kids CDs like this and have never had a problem.

Who's right?

Your method is fine, but if she wants to be an ass, make her clean the damn things before you leave.

Umm, they were badly scratched and fingerprinted.

I tried cleaning them before I brought them back. If they don't their customers cleaning them, they should do it or better yet, provide customers with DVDs hat work. I had to make three trips to the place.

Getting back to my question, is the way I cleaned the discs harmful?

No it isn't harmful. Your not going to wash a 0 off but they will probably sware you are the reason they don't work. You shouldn't have told them you did anything.

No it isn't harmful. Your not going to wash a 0 off but they will probably sware you are the reason they don't work. You shouldn't have told them you did anything.

I couldn't possibly think of why it should hurt them, but just wanted confirmation.

i live in albany ny. i asked that cause it sounded like my manager haha..

anyway. a lot of the dvds that are returned with 'scratches' are just because of finger prints. you can just wipe that off with some kind of cloth. and i dont believe dish detergent damages the dvds. usually a good 'huaahhhh' then rubb with some kind of fabric will clean off the disc.

I've tried cleaning mine, but only with water and pressing hard with tissue. I find that gasoline and a match generally cleans the dirt off nicely :)

Cleaning discs on a regular basis is not a viable option. Next time you check out a movie ask to see the disc and if it is scratched up/dirty as for another copy or see if they will clean it. They don't want people cleaning the dics because, in the end, it will do more harm than good. Customers who haven't got a clue will damage DVDs and then go, "Well I was just trying to clean it" in an attempt to not pay for the DVD they destroyed.

I can't believe how badly people handle DVDs.

These discs did have fingerprints but they were badly scratched too. I did get one to load after cleaning it, but it skipped.

at my video store they make you inspect the dvd first and verify that it's okay.

How is this acceptable to anyone? What does washing it with soap do to a DVD? Do you think this is common practice?
