He was drunk and you just let him go off?

He readily volunteered all his info (and it checked out) and he was pretty cool about it. There probably wasn't anybody on the road that's driving around downtown Austin at 3 am that hasn't had a few drinks. I'll get what I need from him but I didn't see any need to crucify him over it by getting the cops involved.

plus what with this light drizzle its really easy to lose grip

should have called the police if he was drunk. I was hit in november from behind by a drunk driver. My car looked like it had very little damage as well but it cost 2000 to repair it. Still don't know what the herniated discs in my neck are going to cost him.

Just call up your insurance and let them deal with his insurance

If I do this though, won't my premium go up, even though its not my fault? Can I just call his insurance and get what I need from them?

Um, are you joking? Most insurance companies don't deal with individuals - they deal with other insurance companies. What in the hell makes you think his insurance company will bypass yours and deal with you directly? Not to mention he was drunk - why the hell did you not call the cops?

We were recently involved in an accident where a drunk driver hit a minivan and pushed it into our car parked on the curb. We went directly to the drunk driver's insurance (Farmers if you're curious) and took everything through them with no problems. I didn't want to pay our insurance deductible and wait for our insurance company to get it back for us from the at-fault party's insurance company, not to mention we didn't have rental car coverage on our policy but the at-fault driver did. So we got a rental car out of it, didn't have to pay our deductible, and didn't have to wait for them to reimburse us on our deductible if we had taken it through our own insurance company.

I don't know if this is normal or an exception, but it was very straightforward and easy. Much easier and quicker in fact than going through our insurance company, which tends to take its time to do certain things.

Well, just called GEICO, his insurance company and they are going to have someone assess the damages this week and then they'll cover the cost of the repairs (looks like maybe some touch-up paint). Apparently, insurance companies DO deal with individuals.

Thanks for the help though guys, hopefully the damage is as minimal as it looks.
