It suppose to be before the end of this year! :(

Sony confirmed that the Vita will hit Japan before the end of the year but would only guarantee its release by the end of Sony's fiscal year for N. America and Europe. Sony's fiscal year ends in March.

wikipedia says by the time holiday rolls around...

I don't see that on Wikipedia but SCEA CEO Jack Tretton was on GameTrailers right after Sony's E3 press conference and said what I wrote above.

Not saying that a holiday release won't happen but that Sony is hedging its bets by saying the end of its fiscal year for a N. American and European release.

They have to make sure they get enough units manufactured or else they will piss people off if they do a holiday release with chronic shortages.

I can log onto wiki and change the release date to tomorrow if I wanted to, but without a credible source it doesn't matter. Do they have a source listed?

FWIW - I just checked my pre-order from Amazon and it says my estimated arrival date is Jan 3 which means it ships on Jan 2.

These are just placeholder dates right now. December 31 is commonly used by retailers for games that they know are coming sometime later next year but don't have a date yet on.

You mean like what Nintendo did with the Wii? :hmm:

This is why other electronics giants need to learn form Apple. They announce something, it's out a month later. Drives sales before the buzz dies off.

What's the point of pre-ordering? That's not a rhetorical question. Are they expected to sell out on launch day? Just because you pre-ordered doesn't mean there won't be a delay. I pre-ordered a game before, I think Modern Warfare and there was a delay.

Some places do a first ordered, first shipped type thing these days. I don't think this is true for B&M shops, but e-shops are beginning to fulfill orders in order received.

And a lot of hardware has delays at launch, and a pre-order doesn't GUARANTEE you'll get it on launch day. You'll certainly have a better shot than the folks hoping to just stumble on one at the store though. There's also some research into the pre-order numbers which affects initial production numbers. The more people that pre-order, the greater chance that there will be more produced.

That was more a product of the insane demand for the Wii than production shortages. It was in such high demand that it consistently sold over 400k through its first year except for a couple of months in North America. It did over a million in sales for 2006 in the month and a half it was released for North America.

Throw in other markets and it was hard for Nintendo to keep up with demand.

I don't think the PS Vita is going to come anything close to that.

I think the VITA will do pretty well... generally people want it to keep it, not to sell it (i.e. PS3)

Sony is in a different position. Nobody wants their current product so announcing a new product far in advance of release is designed to stop people purchasing competing products in the meantime. ie the Nintendo 3DS or Ipod Touch.

Apple on the other hand has very desirable current products, so announcing new products far in advance would cut into their own sales.

i fail to see the appeal of this thing

You fail to see the appeal for a portable gaming device? I don't know what to tell you... some people like games on the go. Games that can need to be played with more than just swiping your finger on stuff.

I don't remember reading ANY hint that is the case, and that would most certainly have been part of the official announcement. I'm not sure why it ever would...

the interface just looked like Android, plus the playstation life thing or whatever they called "available for android" and the PS Vita being a shoe in makes me believe even more that it's running a variant of android...

It does seem to be running very Smartphone-esque hardware as it's a quad-core Cortex A9 CPU with a PowerVR SGX 543MP4+. It's theoretically doubling the power of the iPad 2 (given the A5 is a dual-core version of both aforementioned chips).

It may be, I'm just saying that it would probably be a large selling point if that was the case... so I would expect them to have said so during the announcement. Doesn't mean they aren't keeping it a secret for whatever reason.
