Just Got Laid Off After 23 Years

Ornery

Lifer
This was not unexpected. We've been on the ropes for a while. I've been kicking around what I might do for a living if this finally came to pass. I'm pretty sure I don't want to go back into the machine shop environment. Been performing service work for the last few months and I KNOW I don't want to do anything more like that!

I figure I can work under the table while collecting unemployment. Only hitch is the insurance premium. Guess my wife could start working full time at the bank. Ooh, she'll love to hear that!

I've also been kicking around working for the City or County. Don't have too many strings to pull, but I'll see what's available. I'd LOVE to be a "double-dipper" when I retire. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em! 🙂

How much can I expect to pull down from unemployment with two kids and a wife working full time? I was pulling down about $45K last year. Been averaging more than that this year...

Crazy situation! Never been down this road before...

Normally i dont pipe into these thread, but i had to say i'm sorry to hear that, ornery. Good luck finding new employment!

well, that sucks, but it's still probably better than what I thought this thread was about when I clicked on it (didn't see the word "off" in the title). 23 years is a long time!

Sorry to hear that, Bud.

Im re evaluating my loyalties and priorities right now and after being kicked in the teeth a few times these last few years, I think Ill be a little less loyal in the future.

This must be tough; when I was laid off I'd only been working a year or so and 6 months at that particular company. I'm sure you'll figure out something though - perhaps you can go to work for Honda or Nissan 😀

Company loyalty is, for the most part, a total waste of one's time. Sucks having to learn that the hard way though!

I always thought unemployment was roughtly 80% of your previous earnings.

Here in Oregon I'm pretty sure it's 80% of your peak income over the last 18 months.

Funny thing is that would be about the same, if not more than, I'm making now.

I never knew if it was gross or net earnings. I just heard the 80% number thrown around quite a bit. If it was gross earnings, I'd probably make MORE unemployed than I would employed. 😕

I was about to congratulate you but I just re-read the title.

sorry to hear that man. good luck finding something new.

Holy Christmas notfred, you ain't kidding it's not that bad! Matter of fact, the boys will both be gone for the evening! :Q

Thanks for the good wishes, guys. IMO, this may very well be a blessing in disguise. I've been coasting for the last 15 years. Time to get it in gear! I only wish unemployment paid 80%. Hell, if it pays that much I'll be idling for the next year!

Well my Dad gets 275 dollars a week, that's the max you can get in Florida. He made over six figures, I think, last year.

Sorry to hear that man.

Good thing you got the affordable used Grand Marquis instead of spending $25K on a new Odyssey. 🙂

This company has plenty of coasters... loyal people living off outdated skills. Then you have 50+ year olds keeping up with the newest technologies that I haven't even began to read about. Tha'ts why the company does a "skill refresh" every so often... meaning they give you a choice... severance package or severance package... meaning it's too late by the time you've realized you're coasting.

Sorry it had to happen, and to a family-man, no less... but word to the wise... keep your skills fresh if you want to be useful. Don't rot away and think you'll be rewarded.

Which reminds me... I've been posting too much today. 😉

Good luck with your job search !!!

Good advice, but then some companies do lay off because they just have to to keep the company going and that may be what happened as opposed to Ornery wasting too much time on AT 🙂

In South Carolina it's 50% of your previous salary. I was getting 268 a week before taxes from them, which was the max.

Take the unemployment and start your own business. Then the only one who can fire you is-------you.😉

Sorry to here of your misfortune. I do sincerely wish you and your family well. It is not easy finding employment in these times, thanks to an economy soundly ignored by our current administration.

Prepare for a long haul.🙁
