May God bless your efforts ornery! Just remember, life is 10% what happens and 90% how you react, and whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

Good Luck!

... and he must be very strong now. 😉

All joking aside, it is always sad to see someone loose their job, especially after so much time working for a company. We as a ATOT community are here for you, but just don?t ask us for any money 😉 😛

Oh, please forgive me, Ornery, but when I saw your thread title, I thought that it read: "Just got laid at 23 years". And then I thought, that isn't right (Ornery is older than 23). So, I reread it and this time I saw: "Just got laid after 23 years. But I thought that that was worse than the previous I read . . . damn, after 23 years?

And then finally, my senses came back in. I was glad to read something more appropriate.

Sorry about your job predicament. I hope that your disappointment turns out to be a blessing in disguise. Best of luck. 🙂

sorry to hear...seems to be a bad week for a lot of ppl i know online and off...

<~~~ just got laid off this past tuesday 🙁

already filed for unemployment and the the check i'm gonna get doesn't even cover a car payment...ICK!...
time to redo the finances...

best of luck to you and us all in making ends meet...

Sorry to hear that as well. Things are bad all over. You going to enjoy some time off or hit the bricks soon?

Washington state has the highest unemployment in the nation, king county is the worst in Washington state, I live in King county. 🙁 I have 4 guys below me till I go out the door. I'm almost looking forward to it as I think my outlook on life will change as well as my attitude. I'm close to 15 years here and it is going down hill fast.

Only good thing is my unemployment is up to almost $500 a week.

Sorry to here of your misfortune. I do sincerely wish you and your family well. It is not easy finding employment in these times, thanks to an economy soundly ignored by our current administration.

Prepare for a long haul.🙁

yep you lost your job because of bush!
rolleye.gif

what a dumbass

Is not his problem, he got more money to burn then all of us combined. People are losing job left and right, and in his mind," that's their problem. I'm rich! screw them." This is what happen when you elect a president who had everything handed to him on a silver spoon, baby bush has never lived a harsh life like most of us have who have to earn their living the hardway busting butt, making low wages, and getting heavily taxed which is overbroke in reality anytime out of the job= homeless is that serious. We're starving but he having the time of his life running this country the way he want, spewing nonsense making people lose confident, the more he open his mouth the worse the economy is.

Read two posts up from what you just posted.

nik

There are no less than 6 posts saying the same thing before what *you* posted. 😛 (BTW I did the exact same thing) 🙂

Good luck Ornery. My dad got laid off back in '93 and he really allowed it to get him down. He had shown great loyalty and great performance -- he had increased sales in his territory every quarter that he had worked for them. But when the company's going down the sh|tter they've got to cut back. My dad took it as a personal thing and it really got him down. But he learned his lesson, now he's playing the other end of the deal, owning his own sales business and selling different things from different companies, moving from one company to a another if he can get a better cut 🙂

Sorry to hear you got laid off. Hopefully you'll get back into the work force in no time. I'm sure you'll take a little break after that 23 years right? Don't complain nor blame it on anything 🙂 God will bring something around the corner 🙂

Seems like Florida sucks compared to the rest of the states...I had called before and it's something like 80% up to $275 a week. Almost minimum wage...🙁

"Sorry to hear that the Bush recession has touched you personally..."

Har! They wish they could blame this on the economy! I can't go into details, but suffice it to say this was pretty much self inflicted. Been a long time coming... simply can't be more specific.

"Good luck, Ornery!

I'm sure that you could find this by yourself, but take a look at Ohio unemployment."

Thanks, I'll do that. I haven't seriously looked at anything, though I've known for a while we were headed for the crapper. Call it procrastination or denial. Just not sure what kind of work would suit me. I know I don't want to work 2nd or 3rd shift. Don't want to work "retail" hours either. I'd like an air conditioned environment. Doesn't mean much to some of you I bet, but after working in a hot shop all these years, it's moved high up on my priority list. I know I'll be taking a pay cut to get all these wishes, but I'll live with it. We've kept our overhead down, so that shouldn't be too much of a problem.

"Ornery,

Best of luck to you in this situation. After being laid of myself after nearly 17 years of service in one company, I can understand your feelings. However, there are many ways to look at it. If you view it as one door closing so another one can open, you'll do fine. I just finished a 2-day "boot camp" on employment searches with a reputable search firm yesterday. The material was presented well. Once I get some of my thoughts (and information) together, I'll send you some of the details of what was covered..."

"...one door closing so another one can open...", yep, that's exactly how I see it. I've been skating along for too long. It's about time I was pushed to do something more... uh... fulfilling.

Whew, sounds like you have a pretty decent "parachute", as you say. I just couldn't expect such a thing from a machine shop, nor do I. I was just hoping to be able to take my time with this job search.

Thanks for offering the employment search details. I'll be researching everything I can get my hands on. Actually, this is kind of exciting. Maybe the impact hasn't hit me yet. I'm just not too worried about it all for some reason!

"Ornery, I'm sorry to hear about your layoff. Even if it wasn't unexpected, being at the same place for 23 years and then leaving is going to be an adjustment. But you have many options available to you now. Get in touch with all your friends and acquaintances and let them know - they might have a lead for you sometime."

Thank you very much. I won't hesitate to pull what ever strings I can. I don't have that many friends, but the ones I have are great! Our family is pretty close too, and rise to the occasion when trouble strikes. I have a feeling this is where I'll have my best luck. I feel sorry for people without these type of connections.

"That's too bad Ornery.

You wanna get out from looking at that DOS like screen all day, huh? Oh well, I can't blame you.

I'm sure you'll land on your feet, even if it means going back to the NC."

It's not just the programming, it's the whole environment. It's over. I'll take the pay cut and not look back. The guys who do this type of work just don't get paid enough for their skills. I'm tired of complaining about it. Just going to put it behind me and move on. Not too bitter, am I? 😉

"Doesn't working for the city/county get you some pretty good benefits and retirement plans? I'd say go for it."

Yep, that's what I'm talkin' about! I don't expect much in the way of wages working for our small city or county, but it should be easy work and decent benefits. Sound like I'll be coasting again? Yeah, but I figure more challenging positions will open up as the years go by. I have a good feeling about going in this direction...

Never thought of it that way, but I will from now on, and thanks!

Eek, that's really bad. I hope you find employment SOON! I plan on taking my time with this job search, but it sounds like you won't have that luxury. Good luck to YOU, my friend!

Stallion, as I told Anghang, I'm taking it slow. Glad to hear your unemployment check would be so high. That's pretty nice. Good Luck!

Your dad is different, especially from me. I appreciate what it's like to own a business. I KNOW how hard that can be. I took the easy route and let somebody else handle all the headaches. Your dad is the kind who is willing to take those problems on himself. I REALLY admire these types of individuals. They're the ones pushing our country ahead. Sorry to say, I'm not likely to ever follow their example, but I'll do everything I can to see that stumbling blocks are removed from their path. Glad to hear he's calling the tune now. That is as it should be!

"God will bring something around the corner"

In a way, I think you're right. I simply can't look at this negatively. Just don't see it that way. I'll put forth as much effort as possible to land a job, but I have a feeling "life" has it's own direction too. Thanks!

A huge THANK YOU to everybody who replied. As I said, I'm overwhelmed! You guys are great!

God Bless You ALL!

heh, I accidentally overemphasized the good part of his story... I meant to emphasize the bad, which was that he really let it get him down, and he was unemployed for over 2 years, and we had to sell the house and one of the cars and go into sh|tloads of CC debt just to keep some semblance of our previous lifestyle. My parents are still paying off the credit cards 😱

That sucks. Maybe.

Good luck in finding a new one.

I used to do NC/CNC stuff way back....and quit one day with no other job lined up. Dumb management pissed me off. It was a rough time for awhile....but it turned out to be one of the best moves I ever did. I came across a job (I wouldn't have otherwise) that I liked much better.

I'm so sorry to hear that Ornery. I know how bad I felt after just being transferred from the same place after 21 years. I also understand what you mean about the coasting and how this may be a blessing in disguise.

Have you considered going back to school and trying a career like teaching? You can get into programs that will either defer payment for school or even forgive your student loans altogether once you start teaching in a rural or inner-city school. The emploment opportunities are going to be enormous in the next few years with the retirement of all the baby-boomers that's already started. You can't beat the days off including the summer break. And the classrooms are air-conditioned. 🙂

Don't know if it's something you'd be interested in, just a thought.

Wow bizmark, that is a different slant! Owning your own business is not for the feint of heart. All the more reason I admire people who can do it. Best of luck to your whole family!

Thanks Vipermeister, I'll be bringing money in soon, I bet.

What work are you doing now, Ferocious? I really fancy the idea of getting some kind of local government job. May have to take a sucky one to get my foot in the door, but that's the way it goes.

Me teaching? Uhm, I've always said that would be the best way to go, where a self employed, PC based business is concerned. No overhead, no zoning prohibitions, and you could have people come to you. My dad was a teacher. Based on how his career went, I'd say it's not for me. I'd be willing to go to a local college for specialized courses geared to getting me up to speed for a particular job, but not a degree. I REALLY hate school!

I keep hearing the job market is pretty tough right now, but I'm not going to be too picky... just a little bit. 😉

How about being a mask designer? Not that much training, and you get to put MD after your name 🙂
Not to mention your job would be the high tech equivalent of playing sim-city all day 🙂

Mask designer! Whoa, you're giving me an awful lot of credit there. I bailed on electronics because calculating circuit voltage and resistance values was too much. Designing masks can't be far behind. I can barely tell a resistor from a diode. My circuits would probably smoke instantly! :Q Hell, I'm having trouble diagnosing my car's beep codes at the moment. I think I better stick to some low tech alternatives this time around. Will that be paper or plastic? 😀
