i'm sure at least 90% of the people that disapprove of your texting don't turn off their phones themselves and at least check their phones if they get a call. and taking the phone out the pocket makes you glow for a few seconds too so they're hypocrites

Amen. I can't stand it when people text and/or talk on their cell phones in the theater. I've had people around me not just text once, but carry on text conversations. It's distracting and annoying as hell. When I go into a movie, my cell phone (almost always) isn't in there with me. Every movie I've seen in the past year or so (as much as I can remember) no matter where it's been, has had some sort of "Please turn off and/or silence your cell phone" message at the beginning.

thats crap

they dont do that here... id say calling during a movie is asnine, but only in the sense that you wont be able to hear the other person speaking. i dont mind it before a film though, who cares about commercials anyway.

when i text in a cinema i try make sure i have the screen covered by a sleeve or something, so that it stops the light being too obvious, you know shielding it so that only i can see, my phones on min brightness as it is anyway because sony fitted a really good screen to this k800i, it doesnt need to be any brighter.

seems like that cop guy obviously didnt have anythingb better todo than flaunt his rent-a-cop powers.

yeah i would agree that him dragging you out was probably way more distracting for fellow movie goers than you just having a small light on for a few seconds. for me this was totally uncalled for.

see, here in the UK we have many better things to be doing that getting all hot and bothered about someone with a damn cell phone in a cinema..... like watching the film for instance, and having our police actually hunt drug dealing criminals instead of wasting time harassing someone for using a phone.

cant say i have ever found that a problem since the whole audience is usually illuminated by the screen istelf, most of the time a cell phone doesnt even compare in brightness....do you just watch movies of the colour black or something?

as usual most of ATOT is taking the moral head up their ass high ground.

if a few seconds of light from a mobile phone annoys you, you have bigger things to be worrying about to be honest.

in reality it is not even remotely a big deal. i havent got the energy to get bothered about such a tiny thing, i use it all on things that actually matter to me.

this is the 21st century, people like to be in contact and connected 24/7, we like everything now and not later, this is the way the world is today, just deal with it i say. im usually too engrossed in a move to realise someone exercising their thumbs anyway

So, you're attacking my post because I made the assumption that at the beginning of a movie, the theater had something to the effect of "turn off your cell phone"?? At the very least, the theater had a message to silence your cell phone. The likelihood of such a message is about the same as the likelihood of "please fasten your seatbelts, put your seat in an upright position..." at the beginning of a commercial jet flight. Don't you ever go to movies? Or are you too engaged in text messaging your friends to notice that message before the film?

I didn't lecture anyone about reading comprehension (thus, it's not me who has the poor comprehension skills.) If you'd like me to summarize, here you go:

The light on cell phones is annoying in a dark room when people are trying to watch a movie. By itself, one wouldn't be bad. But a lot of selfish individuals think they should be the one exception to the rule. There are a few people who reasonably need to be able to check a text message. There are NO people who reasonably need to send a text message. If it's an "emergency" - get up and leave the theater.

Oh, and unless you're a volunteer fireman, EMT, or transplant surgeon, you have very few emergencies in your entire lifetime. Get over yourself, your life isn't that dramatic.

WTF :| :| I mean is that even right? can they fvking do that? He made more of a scene than me texting quietly.

He should have smashed your phone into the ground IMHO. There is a reason why before the movie starts it says to turn off the cellphone, not "leave on vibrate and distract other moviegoers with your screen while you text".

I don't mind if you look to see the msg, but close it right after that...don't start passing it around to friends or writing a long msg and keep on doing it back and forth.

It does, but if you try to be discreet and put it in your lap and then read a message/text you should be FINE. IT takes only 1 finger to text.

Now people compare this to people KICKING SEATS? Kicking seats is something you cannot IGNORE. A cell phone that is discreetly placed so that someone is reading a message is NOT AN ISSUE unless you are staring at the guy to begin with. Watch your damn movie. If you're watching the movie, yes you can feel someone kicking your chair, but if not some guy who's trying to text (so long as his phone is not being waved around)

If the phone from the OP was discretely placed, how did the usher/whomever see it and come over? I still think the OP is severely downplaying what really happened.

Were you even interested in the movie or did you come out with some vague sense of how it was good? I ask this question because, barring a real emergency, NOTHING the little gadget in my pocket does is going to tear my attention away from a truly good movie long enough to text someone.

wow, so there should be a sign that says respond to text messages only if its an emergency, we might then have to put what exactly qualify as an emergency...i mean whos to tell me whether or not i have a good excuse to text or not, the time it took me to read and respond to the text was literally a vast 20 seconds. in that time the officer seen it and came right over as superman, made a HUGE scene for the entire crowd to witnes....and then i left, then came back in and made another scene as i got my sisters to leave. WTF im such a bad guy here....

wow, people.....

If you are telling the whole story, than I probably agree with you. It sounds like the theatre had a no cell phone policy even though certain things can be done discreetly.

The problem with this is that if everyone responds to text messages during the movie, then there is a constant disturbance. So the theatre has to have a policy in place.

Obviously it was a enough of a disturbance for the attendant to see you, pinpoint you and then find you - so it may have been worse than you think.

I'd buy that manager a

Annoying kids should be locked up along with offending cell phones ... if the cell phone survives the kids, then the owners can have them back :D

This is a victory for every single one of us who gets annoyed by people texting and answering calls in movies. Why do people even leave their phones on during movies? I mean can your busy busy life handle the 2 hours without additional human contact? Sorry, most people are just not that important, shut off the phone eh

Once again, it does NOT say to turn it off. It says to "SILENCE THE PHONE" The OP's phone was silenced.

Again, I dont advocate texting in a public theater, nor do I take my phone with me into the movies, but you guys are way off base with your comments...

What about the few people that are that important? Is it okay for them to leave their phones on during a movie?

Seriously people... victory? win? triumph? You guys act like this manager did something to help stop the war in Iraq or something. Jeez

It's simple: If you have a cell phone, turn it OFF. If you have an emergency where you need to text someone, then leave the theater, go text them OUTSIDE of the theater, and come back when you're done with your emergency message.

It is annoying as hell to see people flipping up their ()*&@%# cell phones during a movie, since the theater is dark and you see a little square of light with some jackass punching away a text message. The manager in this case deserves a raise.

I don't know about the OP but i'll comment, first of all, theaters never tell you to SHUT OFF your phone, atleast here.. they have a nice 'please silent your cell phones' message. i don't get upset if people get calls or i see little lights, as long as i dont hear them talking and i dont hear their phone. especially people who make an attempt to be discreet. now i think its silly if they keep going back and forth for a half hour or something but otherwise who cares? a tiny glare at the corner of my eye doesnt bother me considering im sitting in front of a huge screen.

tell the stupid ass kids making noise, the people chomping loudly on their food, and people constantly getting up or kicking my chair to get out. of course, this excludes anyone actually talking on the phone. i never shut my phone off, only silence it.

Wow. Does ATOT know how to anything OTHER than flame people? There's absolutely nothing wrong with texting briefly like that in a theater. Hell, the screen is big and bright, if you're focusing on the brief, dim lit cell screen of a guy like that you're too damn ADD to be in a theater. It makes no noise, it's hard to see unless you're leaning over him, it's not an issue. And NO they have no right to take your cell phone from you. I've never heard of a theater doing that. The only time I've seen where a theater took cell phones was at a prescreen for Superbad since they were preventing people from being able to take cell pictures. And since it was a free prescreen, they could do what they wanted or just not let you in.

No.. It makes them feel all big and powerful to flame the OP for using a cell phone to text during a movie. I bet you half of them are guilty of it themselves.

EDIT: Just to make a point, I'm 18 years old and I think this way. I love texting just as much as any other kid (I send A LOT of texts daily) but there are more important things like my family and friends that I'm with. Speaking of which, friends that text consistently when I hang out with them annoy me. It seems like you should be enjoying who you're with, not who's on the other end of the line.

Agreed. I send like 1 or 2 text a week, and I don't text continuously. If I send one out, it is usually either because of a special occasion, becasue the person I text only responds to texts, or to be polite and invite some people I know to a social event.

Otherwise, I rarely text. I have texted in case of emergency though, or really freakish weather on the road to tell people to watch out.

How amazing that for thousands of years, humans were able to go an hour without texting each other!!!!!1!1! What a tough, resilient species we are!

Seriously though, if you're not a world leader or waiting for a liver transplant, then shut it off or go home. Would common courtesy actually be fatal?
