Just got banned till 2008 in CS last night

Yes, Valve Anti-Cheat (not HLGuard 1.41??) has told me that I am banned from all secure servers until sometime in 2008 after I tried joining a secure server last night. I do not cheat in CS, nor have I ever cheated. I have no idea how I got this message, but I have a sneaking suspicion as to what caused it. I have never been warned before last night. Here's what I changed before playing:

- Upgraded Catalyst to 3.5 (drivers, ATI WDM capture, ATI control panel)
- Uninstalled PowerStrip
- Installed Rage3D Tweak 3.8C
- Tweaked a few graphical settings (overclock, Truform, 4x performance FSAA, aniso etc.)
- Upgraded ASE (All-Seeing Eye) and launched into CS.

I have a feeling that Rage3D Tweak was the culprit here. I noticed that it has two executables...the main one and something called 'gameutil.exe'. I think this 'gameutil.exe' was to blame. All it does is have a bunch of stupid hotkeys that I don't wanna use anyway (I have since disabled it at startup) and one of the hotkeys is a gamma-adjust...maybe HLGuard treats this as a cheat?

Anyways, I rarely play CS and everyone's still a cheater anyways, so its not that big of a deal...I was more pissed off that it thought I'm cheating than at the fact that it banned me for 5 years...I guess I can always change my IP or something...

I have another WON ID for retail CS only...came with my ATI card ironically...

 
I'm pretty sure you've been banned by VAC (Valve Anti Cheat), and not by HLGuard because HLG can't do this.

I believe there IS a bug in VAC that sometimes makes it falsely detect cheats. I don't know if it's been fixed. You should complain to Valve or Sierra or whoever about it. Tell them your WonID and server you were playing on.

It indeed may be the Rage tweak you installed. If you remember a while back ATI was selling cards that offered features like "transparent walls" and "object tracking". Hell, the box even said "if you play against anybody running our cards you'll lose." The entire CS community got really pissed and actually managed to get ATI to remove the software that let you do that stuff. Unfortunately it got out so there are still copies of it around. I imagine someting in the code for your tweak program made VAC or maybe HLGuard think it was the old ATI "cheat" software.

The CD key will work with regular Half Life too. Blue Shift and Opposing Force CD Keys also work, and will give you new Won ID's.

Same, thing too. On my friends old 7500 he can have reallly screwy thing happen allowing him to see through textures 😛

Yeah, that's probably the firmware part of the cheat software kicking in accidentally. A lot of it was built into the chipset as well apparantly. Really, really bad judgement call on the part of ATI.

Ahhhhhhhhhhh. Meh, my brain is like swiss cheese. I got the "a" part right.

I guess ATI cards don't have transparency crap built into the chipset then. Dunno what the hell is making you guys get those weird errors.

nope...that's what happens on older Radeon cards when you force certain zbuffer depths in OpenGL...a friend of mine showed me how he did this on his 7500 and it was a 'free' cheat...undetectable too.
