Just got back from the police station

I wanted to get my permit for a while now and I'm nervous about the BO administration making things more difficult than they already are so I finally got my act together.

Met with a court liason officer and They ran through all paper work, checked up on any priors, captured my finger prints(electronically). Followed by Brief interview with the Lieutenant.

Now they have to send everything off to the FBI for a background check.

They said this takes 11 weeks right now. Is this normal? What are they checking?

Also is it safe to assume my prints are now part of an nationwide electronic print database?

Is this a normal process compared to other states?

Complete Process

1) Take NRA basic course with rang time. Bring Certificate to interview
2) completed & notarized application
3) passport/birth certificate
4) proof of residency
5) Records release form
6) Local town questionnaire
7) Disclosure of any arrests or car accidents and the disposition
8) Finger prints
9) 35.00 to town
10) $19.25 to Department of Public Saftey

11) Interview with Ranking officer. Review paper work.

12) 11 weeks for FBI check

13) Chief of Police issues 60 day temporary permit
14) $35.00 to stat police barracks
15) issue 5 year CC permit

UPDATE 1: 6-17-2009

So here we are almost a full 3 months later and I finally got a call yesterday at my desk from the investigating officer in my Town. She was completing my background check and had to verify a few things with me. She also asked me to clarify my work supervisor's phone number, I guess they really do validate your employment. She said she was waiting for one more thing but everything should be in front of the Police chief for sign off within a couple days.

About time...super excited to finally have it.

Update 2: 6/19/2009

Well I got approved. Passed all the checks and I will picking up the temporary permit this afternoon. Probably go get the permanent one from state police barracks on monday.

They want to make sure they're not enabling a serial killer or anything of that nature. You're definitely in a few databases out there now.

serial killers always get there guns legally I heard lol

wow 11 weeks for a check....you know they do an instacheck with the FBI for purchases in like 3 min over the phone. I bet there is some kind of written in waiting period for CT.

Henceforth, you'll have the added protection of a Black Helicopter always just out of the line of sight and in silent mode.

I filled out a simple form, gave it to the clerk at the Sheriff's office, waited 2 days, went and picked up permit.

No interview, no prints, very quick background check. Just a $5 fee.

Same thing here in Michigan.

EDIT: I should clarify these are the same steps I took for an ownership permit. Never looked into a CC permit.

What state?

MN you fill out paperwork and they send it to you in the mail. You do this at your police station or in my case the sheriffs office since we dont have a local PD. They claim it will take 2 weeks. We will see. I need it for my new AR15.

Carry permit or ownership permit?

As far as your prints being added to databases - maybe. Some of the information captured in the Arkansas permiting process cannot legally be retained once it is used to positively identify you and make a determination as to your fitness to carry. It all depends on how your state legislature enacted the permitting process.

You really buy that? Once you give your fingerprints for anything these days, you can be sure that you are in some database somewhere.

Unless you took ownership before the new laws took place you can't even buy a gun without a permit. The only permit you can get in CT is for CC.

With the exception of rifles and shotguns. no permit required.

I didn't say I believed it, just said it wasn't legal. 😉

Edit: To get back to the OPs question, that process is more or less the same as here in Arkansas for a carry permit (no license requirements simply for gun ownership). While we aren't required to have an interview or anything like that, you have to go through training, submit paperwork and fingerprints that first goes to either the local PD or county Sheriff, then to State Police/FBI for background check. It seems like the timeframe was roughly 10-12 weeks when I initially applied for my permit.

Nebraska here, and we fill out a simple form and pay a $5 fee. In three days, permiting everything checks out, we get the permit.

I just got my purchase permit in December. Went down the Mpls PD, filled out the paperwork, had it in less than two weeks.

Is this pistol permit just to own a pistol?

In Ohio, you need to be 21 to own a pistol, and the retail gun store calls in your application for an instant check. If you are red flagged, you must wait 5 days.

To get a concealed carry permit, you must take an 8 hour training course and ~2 hours of shooting on the range. Then you apply for the license, which costs $50 or so.

Please note this is only about concealed permits...didn't think about ownership cards as we don't have them here.

No, CT is EXTREMELY strict. In most states as long as your paperwork is in order (often including some kind of safety class), and your basic background check works out, you're done. Usually that's a 3-6 week process.

WA is very open. Here you pay your money ($65 now I think), turn in your prints, and they run the background check in about 2 weeks. That's it. Then again that laxity provides ammunition to the other side politically, so I wouldn't mind to see it getting a bit more strict. There's no use in regulation without some form of requirement as well.

Yes, your prints are now 'on file'.

I can hardly decide which part of that process is the LEAST constitutional. Does your anus sting?

Out of curiosity I pulled up the CCW form, and this is one of the questions
Are you a fugitive from justice?
If yes, list any details including date and place from which you are a fugitive.
