Just got back from the grocery store. . .arguing with dimwit clerk

Ok, so there are these sausage and biscuits prewrapped for sale.

It says both on the sign and on stickers placed on the box 5 for 20. . . (think bulk).

So unless my math skills are less than leet - that is 4.00 plus tax per box.

So I'm being rung up, and I notice the box I grabbed rang 5.67. . .(before tax).

I say "Excuse me - but those were 5 for 20$ or 4.00 a piece". . .

The cashier was evidently brain dead, and asked a manager for a void.

The manager comes, flicks the key, then she keys in 5.00

She starts ringing up again, and I was like - "It should've been 4.00". . .

So she keeps ringing up like she did not hear me.

So I patiently wait.

She gets done, asks for the money.

I say - well I'll be happy to settle up when you fix the price mistake.

She said - OOOO. . . .then she said - Well we fixed that.

At this point I grab the sausage and biscuit and say 'see the sticker?'

Then I do a simple one step equation (blew here mind I'm sure) on a scrap of paper I had.

I say the (box)(5)=20

I said the answer is 4.

It was 5.67, then you changed it to five, I reminded you again - then you kept ringing up like I wasn't there. . .

She calls for the manager again (btw at this time there is a huge line behind looking at me like it is my fault). . .

He flicks his key, she keys in 4.00 I pay the bill

What was so frakin difficult?

It is the principle of the freaking thing. . .

Just because it's 5 for $20 doesn't necessarily mean it's 1 for $4.

Maybe it's a special discount for buying in bulk.

having been on the other end of the table.

99% of the crap about price changing no clerk can do. its just plain a security issue for the store. if every clerk can change the price to 2 pennies everytime a pal walks through the line. as for the 5 dollar, 4 dollar thing. Why didnt you speak up when the manager was still there? thats half your fault too for staying quiet.

spend more then 2 hrs ringing people up and youll realize the only sane way to life through the day is to shut off your brain.

lastly... does it really matter that much? i mean... omg... some dipsh|t SUV driving soccer mom got antsy because it took an extra 30 seconds?? believe me.. that b|tch needs to learn some patience. lol

I recognize that the job is drudgery, having cashiered through college. If a customer alerted me to a mistake, I would:

A. Listen
B. Look
C. Do the math

Also, customer service stinks these day. I am middle aged, but when I spend money at a place, I want to be greeted, told to have a nice day, and generally made to feel good about my choice.

So very little of how I spend my money is my choice between health insurance and taxes - so when I pick a place to shop - yes I want to be catered to.

Not at an assinine level, but at a cheerful level.

If the 50 year old cashier is bummed because of her career choice - HER problem. She can go to school and get a better job. Until then, the management of the establishments that I spend my money in need to train their employees that it is a 'service' industry - and that they are replaceable.

Ok wtf should I have to tell the manager anything. I don't work there. See my previous post to this as to how I feel when I shop somewhere.

As to the soccer mom being impatient - I could care less about her. I was however itching to get home, and was tired of arguing over a dollar. However, I won't be screwed if I know I am right.

Most of the time you have to purchase the specified number of items to get the sale price. The computer will ring up a single item sale, at normal price. The sale is for a certain number of items for a certain price, you didn't meet that criteria.

In some states the store must give you the sale price for buying a single item in thoes types of sales if you ask. They are not required to offer it to you.

In the end you were the person who held up the line arguing with the cashier and then the manager over a dollar.

Famous last words of a doomed ATOT rant thread...

OP: Remember being in high school and thinking, "I wonder what that marijuana smoking, frequently absent, skank girlfriend keeping, mullet hosting idiot will do for a living when he grows up?" The answer has finally arrived...

@Sampson: Unfortunately there is much truth to your post. Playing games with pricing is one of my peeves.

You don't get rich just giving away dollars all the time. The majority of millionaires in this country become millionaires through living frugally and fighting for that last dollar in situations exactly like the OP described.

I have never once had a grocery store require that the entire lot be purchased to get the sale price. Must be something that they do in Canada, but they sure as hell don't require that here in the US. At least not in any of the few dozen chains I've been in throughout at least 25 states.
