Just got back from a great day of skiing..(*Pics*)

Well, over the last few months, I have been skiing pretty much every Tuesday at Cannon Moutain since it's 2 for $40 for an all day pass. I recently got a new digital camera, a Powershot A40 (thanks RossMAN) so I brought it with me today to take some pics. It was a bit cloudy and very windy and cold when I got there @ 9am. The base temperature was about -8F with a gusty 30-40MPH wind with off and on snow. The summit was really harsh, as usual, and I had to avoid it for most of the first part of the day. It was about -15F on the summit, but the wind was flirting with 50MPH quite often.

As the day went on, it cleared up and the wind calmed down a bit. Once the sun came out it was a beautiful day, and I started snapping some pics. The snow was great as they just got about 10in. on Sunday, so there was some nice deep powder on the sides of the trail. Some of the main, wider open trails near the summit were a bit icy as the wind was blowing all the loose snow off. All and all it was a great day. 🙂

Hopefully, next Tuesday will be another nice day.

I'm still learning this A40, so the pics are just OK. I'm trying to get a handle on the ISO and shutter speeds still. Anyways...here are the pics. 🙂

Shot from the summit, with interstate 93 on the right

Another summit shot, with someone's goofy hat in the way. 😉

Mt. Lafayette in the clouds

Mt. Lafayette with me in the foreground

Another summit shot with my finger in the way 😱

Similar shot minus the finger 😉

Another nice view

Cloudy Mt. Lafayette close-up

View from the tram building at the summit

Lower mountain with a frozen Echo Lake in the foreground

Mt. Lafayette in the distance

Another nice view from the "Vista" trail (one of my favorites)

All pics were shot 1600 x 1200, SF (Superfine) and resized with PS7 to 1280 x 960.

🙂

Why no pics of you at the Ski Lodge, stiff drink in one hand and a Snow Bunny in the other? The only pic of you is from 40feet away and you are masked. Reminds me of Tim Allen's neighbor over the fence...you see his eyes, but never his whole face....:Q

I should add that is BEAUTIFUL country. I do not miss the snow (I don't ski...clumsy people like me SLIDE down on our asses, but don't ski 🙁) but I do miss the scenery and the crisp, clean smell of the countryside in winter. 🙂

Well....first off, I really don't drink and when I ski, I generally ski from when I get there until the lifts close and never see the lodge. As for ski bunnies...none at the moment. 😀 However, some are on order. As for me, I wasn't about to expose my skin in those temps man! 😉

🙂

Also, the great day of skiing is ofsetting most of the anger @ the bogus ticket I got on the way home...grrrr.🙁

OK...just checking to see if you were paying attention. 😉 You've got a PM coming.

I just came back from going to Whiteface Mtn. over the weekend. I had a great time, tho' this is the first year I've truly skiid (did it one time last year). HOpefully next year I'll be good enough to bring a digital camera with me on the slopes and not worry about falling and breaking it. 🙂

I usually ski farther north (Stowe area) but i remember the last time I skiied Cannon..

-45 degrees with wind at the top. I was with a friend and our bindings froze solid after 1 run. We had to get a knife to break the ice. By far the best damn day of skiing I've ever had though (besides the frostbite 🙁). Cannon is a good, hard mountain.

Funny you say that. I rarely fall, and I have actually only tumbled twice this season...but one was today. It was nearing the end of the day, and I was skiing a little too fast through some totally untouched deep powder, and I leaned a little to one side..and WHAM. I came down hard on my shoulder and heard it pop. I thought it was dislocated, but it only hurt for a minute. However, since I got home, it is starting to burn. I bet tomorrow will be a sore day. 🙁

Cannon is actually a pretty dangerous mountain for NH. Several people have died...including one guy last week on the very trail I skiid this afternoon a few times. Kind of weird to think about while you're on it.

How is Stowe? The farthest north I have gone is Sunday River...but that is a hell of a drive. I was considering trying Okemo some day.

The coldest day I have ever been there was early this winter. It was -32F actual temp at the summit, but thankfully it was not super windy..only about 15-20MPH. 🙂

<---- Is jealous as heck. :disgust:

I don't get to go skiing this year, don't have the cash. Next year. My equipment will keep till then.

I've been to Stowe, Mount Snow, Jay Peak and Killington (all VT resorts). Of those, Stowe and Jay Peak are my favorites for difficulty of terrain, number of trails and layout. Killington has problems with the layout and being crowded. Mount Snow (and Stratton and Okemo are similar) is way to easy. The blacks there are a joke.

I was at Jay Peak over Prez Weekend and it was -20F at noon at the lodge on the Saturday. Two runs, go inside to warm up.

BTW, snowboarder here.

Yeah, I hear ya on that. I went to Mt. Sunapee a lot in the early winter since the two big storms we had around the holidays dropped a ton over there due to their western location. The snow was awesome, but since Okemo took over, they are super expensive. It's $48 to ski on a weekday there...a whopping $3 less than the $51 it costs on the weekend. It was nice only having a ~1hr drive though... Anyways, their black diamonds made you go WTF, why the hell is this a bd? Although they did a have a couple of pretty tough glades trails, but I'm not sure if glades are very good with a board I would imagine.

I may take a couple days off and check Stowe out sometime. Is there a Marriott, or Marriott run hotel (Courtyard, Residence Inn, Fairfield, etc.) up there by chance? I can stay for $39 a night if I can find one..🙂

🙂

I'm just curious if the skiiers here rent or own their own equipment? I hate having to pay like $30 each time to rent 'em, however, it does seem like buying equipment is rather expensive.

Nope, Stowe is actually a throwback to the old days of a proper ski village (not a fake built up one). You will find a bunch of small hotels, a nice little town, and some great skiing/riding. Prices there are quite reasonable too. Check their website, lots of links there. Stowe.

And if you want glades, go to Jay Peak. They have over a dozen different glade trails. I went thru a couple and they are great. Unfortunately, I ride a longer board (165) which makes tight tree riding very difficult and dangerous. Need to break out my older 157 for that.

Buying is expensive and you should only buy your own gear (skis or board, bindings, boots) if you plan on going frequently. I'd say at least 10 days a year. In my case of snowboarding, board was $450, bindings were $180, boots were $280, total of $910. With rentals at $30 a day, thats over 30 days of rentals. Most gear will easily last you three years (more likely 4 or 5 if you keep good care of it), so it will pay itself off. Not to mention, you get much more higher quality gear and its consistant each time you go out. Just to note, my board and boots are towards the higher end, bindings are middle.

Well, it really depends on how much you ski. Once I started to ski more than 4 or 5 times a season, I decided to get my own stuff. Plus, with your own equipment, you get more comfortable since you are always using the same stuff. You get a feel for how the particular ski behaves and such. While it can be very, very expensive to get some ski equipment, it does tend to last a long time. I'm still skiing on a pair of K2 Gyrators I got when I was just out of high school and I'm 29 now..little more than 10 years. I am finally trading them in this season for some nice shaped skis. One thing to not skimp on is boots. Once you get a nice boot that is comfortable on your foot, you will keep it for years and years.

One good thing to do is shop for ski packages at the end of the season, or even in the off season like the summer. They are usually liquidating the past years model, and you can get some great deals. I had to replace the bindings on my K2's this year since they were so old the ski shop wouldn't even touch them. I got a really nice $275 binding that was due to be replaced by the 2003 model for $110 by haggling with the salesman a bit. I can now concentrate on getting a nice set of skis in this off-season since I already have great boots and brand new bindings...

🙂

I dropped over the boarder to Jay Peak when I was doing some boarding in Quebec.
Jay Peak had some intense terrain, but I found it really icy. Not hardpack ice, but blue ice. Kind of scary.. the stuff you can't sink an edge into if your life depended on it. The biggest problem was the wind... it was just blowing the snow right off the runs... anyway, great resort. I'd definitely go back... also, kudos to JP for making ticket prices @ par with the CDN $. Really makes it worth it.
