sorry for the general hate. Tell them the salary you want plus you and your family get bug free software, not the public release crap, as long as you work there.

What do you do if you don't mind me asking?

I like to refer to myself as a translator between HR and IT. Project management type of stuff in HR, pretty much, systems and processes.

that rarely works in the real world. a company like MS has the resources to hire whomever they want and if they end up playing cat-and-mouse too long with HotChic they'll probably look elsewhere.

I don't know...It's happened to a number of friends. Of course they were in the position to do it. Experts in their field. It just recently happened to a buddy with Apple Computers - they really wanted him and he through out some ridiculous number, plus told them they had to pay 3000 a month for for a new house in CA to convince him to move, and pay his current mortgage and sell his house for him.
they came back over the top and said they would pay his mortgage and selling his house was part of the relocation package.
It's a risky game for sure, but the rewards can be substancial.

I'm a little low level for that type of bargaining. That's more in the "extreme expert or executive" level. I'm pushing for a moderately higher base salary that's still within the range for the job, that's all.

So push! You have nothing to lose. Besides; MS will keep your resume/contact info on file for awhile. They'll be back.

Too nice. No matter what level you are at if they sought you out I would aim high (that is, if you are happy where you're at).

i imagine they have excellent benefits there.
They have good benefits, but I'm with a good company now so the benefits increase isn't extreme. They have some kinda cool benefits, like a prime card that gets you discounts in all sorts of places (two for one dinners at really nice restaurants, random stuff like that.)
BTW Redmond and Seattle are great places to live.![]()
I live in Bellevue right now; I like it but I'm more of a country girl. If I took the MS job I might look in the Carnation area for somewhere to live.![]()

You'd be foolish to not go for it, all guns blazing. The way the world works is this:
You're unemployed:, you desperately need a job in order to eat: McDonalds won't hire you for some crazy reason. WalMart says you're over-qualifed, even though you've already said you'll take ANY job.
You're employed: Employers throw themselves at you. Head hunters wait for you outside your job with business cards in hand.
