sorry for the general hate. Tell them the salary you want plus you and your family get bug free software, not the public release crap, as long as you work there.

I like to refer to myself as a translator between HR and IT. Project management type of stuff in HR, pretty much, systems and processes.

so you physically take the specs from HR to IT? do you have people skills?

Ahh, office space. I do work in a cube farm. I wonder what would happen if I took down a wall...

I don't know...It's happened to a number of friends. Of course they were in the position to do it. Experts in their field. It just recently happened to a buddy with Apple Computers - they really wanted him and he through out some ridiculous number, plus told them they had to pay 3000 a month for for a new house in CA to convince him to move, and pay his current mortgage and sell his house for him.

they came back over the top and said they would pay his mortgage and selling his house was part of the relocation package.

It's a risky game for sure, but the rewards can be substancial.

I'm a little low level for that type of bargaining. :) That's more in the "extreme expert or executive" level. I'm pushing for a moderately higher base salary that's still within the range for the job, that's all. :)

So push! You have nothing to lose. Besides; MS will keep your resume/contact info on file for awhile. They'll be back.

Agreed. If the money is right and you are still unsure, ask for other things. more time off, bonus/stock, 3 weeks guaranteed training a year, etc. you're in HR, you know how these things work.

Too nice. No matter what level you are at if they sought you out I would aim high (that is, if you are happy where you're at).

I'm aiming for what it would legitimately take to get me over there. If you get paid substantially more than you're worth, you're setting yourself up for trouble when you don't live up to your salary.

do you know how they found out about you, if you were not looking for a job?

My company and theirs swap employees all the time, so it's just general networking. I'd talked to the recruiter once before as well, so in this case I think she just remembered me.

Congrats :)

Hopefully it will work out well for you.

My friend who lives in Bellevue just bought a house in Issaquah. It took him forever to find a house in his price range. He told me whenever he found a place and was going to put in an offer......... it was gone before he could act on it.

Cheers,
Aquaman

Which employer offers the best chances of vertical (or even lateral) movement from where you currently are?

i imagine they have excellent benefits there.

They have good benefits, but I'm with a good company now so the benefits increase isn't extreme. They have some kinda cool benefits, like a prime card that gets you discounts in all sorts of places (two for one dinners at really nice restaurants, random stuff like that.)

BTW Redmond and Seattle are great places to live. :)

I live in Bellevue right now; I like it but I'm more of a country girl. If I took the MS job I might look in the Carnation area for somewhere to live. :)

carnation is bfe!

You're employed: Employers throw themselves at you. Head hunters wait for you outside your job with business cards in hand.

Definitely true. I haven't been unemployed, but when I was actively looking to change jobs, I had a hell of a time finding anything. Now that I've moved 3000 miles and started a new job, I'm getting emails almost every day from recruiters.

Kind of depends on how you look at it. I have a champion with a lot of pull in the current company, and I have a great reputation and a good open career path. However, it's a smaller company - being a director here might be equivelant to a sr manager at MS. In my interviews they did really talk up the opportunity and training, but my feeling is it might be a bit more of a box because they're more formal there as far as switching roles.

Microsoft has many more benefits, such as Free Access to the Pro Club in Bellevue, access to the Company Store, free access to any prototype software.

I've been there 8 years now....it's a great place to work.

Free Pop FTW!
