Let me guess, the new postion didn't involve a command of English.

What do you do if you don't mind me asking?

Koing

I like to refer to myself as a translator between HR and IT. Project management type of stuff in HR, pretty much, systems and processes.

huh? I'm gonna pretend you said programming. Anyway, how did they get your name and enough good info to invite you for an interview?
People skills, something rare on ths board. Folks who know Paige even a little know she has them in spades.

Went and interviewed yesterday, got an offer today. I'm not job hunting, they invited me over. I'm glad they think I'm good for the role, but I'm pretty happy where I am. And they're lowballing me on the offer, so now we're playing chicken. Interesting situation to be in.

Shens.

Not the part about the job, but about you being hot.

What's your problem, man? Do you just like saying random asshole-ish things?

It couldn't be the fact that you have no discernible talents/skills aside from making incoherent posts on internet messaging boards about your life's shortcomings and how "The Man" is keeping you down. Besides, you couldn't find a job pre-Katrina, so before that you blamed it on 9/11. Give up.

Ok, now that I'm done with that. Congrats HotChic! It seems like you're in a nice situation. Just see what you can get out of it, and remember to never burn any bridges in the process. :)

Congratulations, Hotchic! What a satisfying feeling it must give you to be pursued!

Tough decisions to wrestle with!

In a post above it sounded like you may have discretion as to your MS office location. I?d rate that an excellent +.

Sounds like your current employer & MS may be about on par as far as investing in / developing you, and growth opportunities.

With you, MS avoids a 3rd party recruiter fee, avoids relocation costs, and gains a worker vouched for by an MS employee. What a good deal for them, certainly justifying a little higher starting pay for you.

Also, if you resign, your current employer might offer a raise to retain you. Another reason the MS pay needs to be significantly higher than your current salary, not just a little bit more.

Since you?re playing chicken, would it be reasonable, or could you be assertive enough, to ask for a signing bonus? Maybe a few $ grand, or some signing perk like a new laptop, or a flextime schedule, or a preferred office location, or a telecommute arrangement, or something?

Your jesting thread header ?evil empire? may hint an unrecognized subtle attitude that?d make it hard for you to adapt to MS company culture. I totally sympathize.

If you decide to stay put, I?d avariciously flat-out tell MS the reason is money, that you appreciate their offer but it just isn?t attractive enough to induce you to change. MS may (or not) surprise you with a much bigger number a month or two down the road. (That happened to me once, & I scored a 50% salary increase. Alas, 11 months later a lay off put my entire dept. on the street).

I wouldn?t let myself feel stampeded into an uncomfortable decision by the Monday suspense date. If you decide against this big change now, directly or by delaying past Monday, you or MS could always approach the other again later. After all, it could be a wrenching change on many levels, so no need to be hasty.

Finally, & maybe radically, does this situation with MS show an opportunity for you to open your own shop, to serve them & other companies as an independent recruiter on a contract basis? Maybe, huh? You?re probably not thinking in that direction, but still?

May you sleep well Sunday night!

I don't imagine having your incoherent and embarassing ramblings posted on the Internet, searchable via your real name, helps.

Shame on you for turning yet another thread into a little plea for self-pity. Hell, shame on me for giving you another 2 seconds of e-fame for it.

Wow... What am I doing wrong? I've been at the same company for 5 1/2 years, but I've only received 1 small promotion, a couple of puny bonuses, and an average 6% pay increase year to year.

The most powerful tool is networking. I don't think anybody can deny that. The time to make a big jump is salary/responsibility generally only comes from switching jobs. It's all who you know. That comes from networking.

New update: after a weekend of hard thinking, I've decided to turn the offer down. Thought some more about the MS project and decided it doesn't have a good enough chance of success in the first phase that I want to jump on board yet.

Glad you made the right decision for you. They'll come courting you very hard, eventually.

Congratulations on making a difficult decision.

Deciding is both a growth experience and a kind of victory.
