So I jumped on the $40 bf deal on a gameboy advance. The screen brightness absolutely sucks; playing it after dark (even with good room lighting) is a pain. Is the GBA SP backlit? How much brighter is it?

The SP is "front-lit" meaning its a bunch better, but the lighting is from the front. The DS has a much much better screen and is more of a "true" LCD in that it has backlighting. I couldnt do anything on the original GB advanced. Only when I bought the SP were I able to game a bit.

GBA SP is backlit as is the new Nintendo DS...

If you want to keep the GBA, get a light for it... While still not as good as the SP, it works....

I installed an Afterburner light on my gba.

It rules. I'm not sure if they still sell it though, you may just want to get an SP or DS.

Where did you score an SP for $40? I think I'm going to trade in my brand new advance for an sp.

GBA SP is great.

Backlighting works and comes with built in rechargeable battery.

eh, saw someone here earlier selling a gba sp for $60 but I was too late. unless I find something I'll probably just end up giving my gf the gba for Christmas and upgrading to the SP down the road, after all this is a present for her.

It also ate batteries like a dirty bitch.
That's nothing. The Nomad(a portable Genesis) ate through its power reserves 25% quicker.:p

Like a couple people have said, the SP isn't technicaly backlit, although it appears to be. I think it's lit from the sides and if you tilt the screen a little bit and look down inside it, you can see the two lights on the sides. I traded in my GBA for an SP shortly after the SP came out and it was such a good trade. I hardly ever played my GBA because even with good lighting, it was hard to see. The SP is so much better and I can only imagine the DS being even better. The SP is also a great trade-up from the GBA because of the rechargeable battery. It works great and the battery lasts like 10 hours. Add in the flip nature of the SP so it's 1) smaller and 2) it protects the screen, and the SP is a much better product than the GBA and is what the GBA should have been when it came out.

Someone also mentioned the Afterburner, which is a lighting package that goes inside the GBA and works pretty much the same way that the SP's built-in lighting system works. I thought about doing the mod to my GBA before I traded it in but the rechargeable batteries on the SP was what sold me. If you intend to use the GBA a lot, I'd definitely make the jump to the SP. I can't say anything about the DS compared to the SP, though, since I don't own one.
