Don't know what to expect. I don't know much about it... needless to say i'm pretty worried. :(

But i am really pissed too. My sister just called me and told me. They found out on Tuesday. No need for my mom or dad to call me and tell me, i guess. The only reason my sister knew is because she called home to talk to my mom for a bit and my mom 'happened' to mention it.

What the fvck is that? :|

My father has Type II diabetes.

It's pretty manageable with regular insulin checks.

My dad was diagnosed with it this year... and not too long I will be too.. everyone on my dads side has it practically. There really isn't much to worry about ( I mean there is, but there isn't ) no one that has it on my dads side has any real risk of becoming terminally ill. one of my best friends has it, and you'd literally never know. All he does is take insulin 3 times a day. My dads is even less serious. he just has to lay off certain foods.

scare me? so if my dad died they tell me...what....a month later?

That logic makes no sense to me. I've told my mother that i don't like it when she does that. but does she change? No. I would rather know right away than be 'protected'. i'm 24 for christs sake. I know my parents are going to have health problems.

(don't mean to take it out on you iamwiz. i'm just really pissed right now as you can see.)

My father has the same. He works out regularly though, and stopped eating those chocolate Dove ice cream bars long ago... your father should be fine as long as he takes care of himself and monitors his sugar level.

Peace,
Dezign

Thanks for the support guys (and girl). He doesn't need to take insulin for now anyway...just changing the way he eats and stuff like that i guess. My sister is an RN and she doesn't seem to concerned.

I'm probably overreacting.

oh...and they found an infection in his prostate and running tests....fvckin great.

Diabetes is a disease that takes time to adjust to. For many the first response is denial. After all, the newly diagnosed diabetic usually looks and acts just fine, unless it was discovered by a trip to the emergency room. A lot of getting a feel for what is actually going on is happening. Also, to what degree is he diabetic? Occasional rises in blood glucose, or is he hovering around 250+? Perhaps the current degree of hyperglycemia is easily controlled by diet and exercise. Obviously I dont know the specifics, but you should try to get them to tell you when they are ready to discuss it. Also, parents have this irrational (to you) desire to protect their children regardless of their age. Sometimes they downplay things to protect you. Might be some of that too. I understand your concern, but diabetes is not what it was. It is much easier to control if the patient follows through. I won't tell you not to be concerned, but I assure you I know more about this than I could get from google. Be supportive and try to be patient. Your dad can indeed be just as fine and stubborn and ornery and loving as he always was, and be around for a long time.

they're your parents, they're worried enough about it and don't want to pass that on to you. Agreed i feel its wrong because my parents didn't tell me about my dad's heart problems till my sis did but thats who they are. Get over it or you'll regret it

EDIT: im 24 too btw. and I too am diabetic and can tell you it's no big deal as long as you watch your diet and workout regularly. If you have any questions, feel free to ask

I'm not going to hold a grudge or anything.

I'm kinda worried about the working out part. My dad has had blockage in his heart and has 'shints'(sp?) put in. I'm not really sure how much working out he can do without putting his heart in jeopardy?

simple walks are good enough. Main thing is to just get some sort of exercise. And I cant emphasize how important diet is.

yeah i know my mom will keep his diet straight. she was good about that when he had really high cholestorol. If walking is good enough, that is good to hear.

Thanks for informing me about this guys. It is appreciated.

Chances are it is type two diabetes (almost definitely), which is easily treatable. Small amounts of exercise (walk a mile a day, that sort of thing), plus watching the consumption of simple carbohydrates should be all he needs. Type two isn't that big of a deal, as long as you are conscientious. Good luck to him.

Echoed my thoughts also,

Yeah, it sucks. Diabetes is in my family, I just hope I never get it. If it makes you feel any better, my grandma who had diabetes made it to the ripe age of 99 :Q

its all over my family on both sides. People on my dad's side have to take insulin, people on my mom's side need to just watch what they eat. I hope I get neither one. I feel for ya though...but its not as bad as it sounds. Certainly not something to really lose a lot of sleep over.

 like most i think i'm prone to overreacting when it is something i don't know much about. I feel a lot better about the whole thing.

My Brother has had Diabetes Melitus (Type 1) since he was 2 years old (he is now 18) my father has type 2 now aswell. It is manageable with modern techniques and a healthy diet, menaning low fat meats and such. Nowadays with modern diet plans it is no longer necessary to massively cut back on sugared food and drink, just have to watch out with a few specific high sugar items such as soft-drinks and snacks that the amount of injected insulin is sufficient. There are tables that list how many units of insulin are necessary when eating or drinking certain things. It should be part of the treatment.

If you have any questions I would be glad to help.

Diabetes is very manageable in most cases and occurs often as you get older especially if you don't eat right. My dad was diagnosed at 58 years old and did very well the first year and a half. He ate right, lost weight, didn't have to take is pills because it was undercontrol. In the past few months he hasn't bee so rigid. He has gained weight, and he took his blood sugar this week and it was above 300. It should be below 140.

His sister recently was diagnosed with diabetes as well. Her blood sugar was so high that it was affecting her vision. Now that she has it undercontrol she can see fine.

Diabetes is A LOT more manageable these days. Maybe they didnt tell you because they feel you will worry over something that more and more people live with in this day and age, and they didnt want to stress you out over it.

Chill out

I am a dad who found out last July that I have Onset (Type II) Diabetes. Since then I have lost over 30 lbs watching carbos and feel much better. Attending group Diabetes classes at the local hospital have helped me learn why certain things have been happening to me over the past 10 years or so. And now I am learning to deal with them.

For me, finding out about diabetes was the best thing ever because now I know how to combat it. In my case I control my sugar level by diet and exercise. Right now I am in the average glucose range, which is perfect.

Life is all about how you deal with problems. We all have a cross to bear we just have to deal with it and move on.

Just understand that as humans we all have our good and bad days. Sometimes we feel great and other times we get depressed. Last holiday season I had a hard time watching others eat chocolate and other things that I cant. It was tough but I got through it.

Support your dad and encourage him the best way you can. If he accepts this challenge positively I am sure he will live a normal life.

My dad had diabetes too pyonir, and as long as he behaves himself, he should be just fine. Just kick his ass if you see him eating junk food.

*hugs*
