Zelda 3, Oracles and Link between Worlds are what I enjoy. I did also enjoy Zelda 2 strangely enough, there's just something about that game. The 3rd person Zelda's...not so much.

There wasn't really anything wrong with Zelda 2, however the change from overhead to side scroller made it feel more like a platformer than an adventure game at the time.

Was anyone else disappointed with link between worlds thinking that you were finally going to get to see the land of gold you helped restore in LTTP, only to find it's the dark world again? I know I was. :\

My recent first-time playthrough of the original has shown me how much I appreciate LTTP for everything you mentioned plus more. I am on the last dungeon of the original and I don't know how anyone beat this without a map.

I beat it without a guide. ():) Honestly, I didn't find the puzzles to be that bad. I just needed some time to think things through. The only puzzle that REALLY threw me for a loop was one where you're completely in the dark on a floating platform and on the long trip you have to light all these torches with the firing rod AND make it all the way back and get through the door before even a single one goes out. That took me the better part of half an hour to get the hang of.

Yeah. I think he was saying the original NES Zelda game would have been impossible without a guide.

I didn't use a guide when I finished Zelda 3 LttP back in 1993 or so.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the original game ship with a paper map of the overworld? Or maybe that was something included with nintendo power.

For anyone who didn't get a chance to play wind waker on gc, the remastered version on the wii u is fantastic. Basically all of the issues with the original were fixed with this version like the annoyingly slow boat.

I really wish skyward sword didn't require motion controls, I find no enjoyment in that control scheme (I know some people do)

Also, lttp is the best in my opinion. I fondly miss my snes. It seemed to me to be the golden age of video games. Lttp, Super Metroid, FF2/3 (4/6), Chrono Trigger, The original mario kart, Yoshi's island, Super Mario RPG (worked all summer hauling hay for that game), Killer Instinct and SF II turbo... The joys of youth.

Oh wow, so no more flipping the channels between islands? Jeez I was already kinda tempted because I thought "nowadays I can just read my tablet between the islands" but an actual faster boat would be much nicer.

I couldn't agree with a paragraph more. Well except the fact I paid for Super Mario RPG by collecting the change from our entire house. Made the woman at the store kinda upset I remember.

It's an upgraded sail that you'll probably come across just as it becomes tedious (triforce quest). That pacing was improved in other ways as well. That said, I want to go back and 100% the GameCube version with and without the Tingle Tuner now. :)

Link to the Past did, yes. I still have my box and papers somewhere. There was also a little folded hints book (written from the perspective of Sahasrahla) that had tips to help you get past points in the game where players were expected to get stuck. It had a spoiler warning on the outside and was sealed shut with a triforce sticker. Pretty neat little detail.

I found it lame how Super Mario Bros. 2 was just the first game with the levels rearranged. At least with Zelda they included the second quest for free. I wonder if it would have been received better if the second quest had been Zelda 2 and the original game only had the the first quest.

Huh? Neither SMB2 Japan (AKA The Lost Levels) nor SMB2 USA (AKA Dokki Dokki Panic/Super Mario USA) are re-arranged levels from the first game. SMB2 (J) was to SMB1 what Super Mario Galaxy 2 is to Super Mario Galaxy and New Super Luigi U is to New Super Mario Bros. U. They are sequels that don't stray too far but they are certainly more than simple DLC-style expansions.

Kinda looks the same I think. Same game as the original with different level layouts with heightened challenge. So if you're talking SMB2 US, then yeah. Almost as big a departure from the original as Zelda 1 and 2 were.

Even though it introduced entirely new play mechanics with Luigi having different play control (jumps higher/slower but slips more), poison mushrooms, negative/reverse Warp Zones, score/progress saving, new variable weather conditions including wind, and twice as many levels, you don't consider that a true sequel? It didn't even support 2-player mode anymore, if I recall correctly.

I guess Pikmin 2 wasn't a sequel to Pikmin. Halo 2 wasn't a sequel to Halo: Combat Evolved. Gears of War 2 wasn't a sequel to Gears of War. Resistance 2 wasn't a sequel to Resistance: Fall of Man. God of War II wasn't a sequel to God of War.

It was not a remix of the original levels like Master Quest in Zelda. The original SMB already repeated stages with tiny additions, like Bullet Bill, Cheep Cheeps, ice, or castles that now have spinning fire rods where there were none before. I think you are confusing that with the sequel when that existed entirely within the original game.

The bricks, trees, clouds, etc DO look different between the original titles. Yes, it's cosmetic, but that doesn't mean they weren't entirely new levels. They were and it was a new game in the series as much as most any sequel in any series that ever was.

I just picked up a Link Between Worlds. Great reviews so we'll see if it is truly close to LTTP. I may have to pick up Link's Awakening on Virtual Console as well.

I got Link's Awakening free on the VC store as a club nintendo reward and have yet to play it on the 3DS lol. Should probably do that sometime.

I got my 3DS in 2011 (Ambassador here) and and it's still the only game I have completed on it! Loved every second of it too.

Link's Awakening or the Kirby Adventure 3d remake for 3ds? Need something for the plane.
