[2014-05-11 Edit]

Recently rediscovered one I had forgotten about:
Rename one file (F2 if you're on the keyboard) and press [TAB] to rename the next one (or [Shift]+[Tab] for previous). That's a huge help when I'm using remote desktop from my phone or tablet.

Maybe you know some more like this?

D:

I've been doing this through the command line!

For those with filename extensions hidden, this might be obvious. I've always configured Windows to show extensions since I got used to Win98A, so it doesn't even look like this should work.

Essentially you are renaming all the files the same. Windows puts the (x) so there isn't a duplicate file name in the same folder.

Same thing will happen if you download the same file in the same location over and over again.

I had no idea you could do this. And I also have no idea what I would use it for...I never name files identically with a series # at the end.

I suppose that's a good way to quickly hide any porn files.

That's probably the only use for it.

Proggy.

I don't used explorer either. The proggy I use is called directory opus. Great platform, definitely worth the money imo

i've known about that forever, ever since i accidentally did it.

it's not a renaming scheme i would *ever* want. so i don't give a damn.

I use metamorphose2 for batch renaming. haven't found a prog yet that matches it.

That is pretty slick. I can't believe I never accidentally figured this one out.

I haven't used explorer for browsing in over 20 years so i guess it's irrelevant.

it's kinda useless for large number of files cuz of the odd naming scheme. I do use it though in some cases e.g. say you have two files, blah.cpp and blah.h, you can select both and rename them to blah2.cpp and blah2.h in one go.

I didn't know about the F2+Tab feature. That's neat!

The original feature--mass renaming--is more of a liability than a feature. I've encountered it many times accidentally, and there's only been once or twice when I've actually intended to use it.

Explorer needs a massive overhaul ASAP. MS should buy out Directory Opus and stick parts of it into explorer. Tabs for a start. The file/folder manipulation options next. Its seriously prehistoric. 1995 prehistoric.

This doesn't work on XP SP2. Needed to do this on an offline work PC today. :(

id like to see tabs built in natively. i think id prefer that over multi-frame managers, but it does need some work.
