Just did a blind taste test of 100% Kona and 10% Kona Coffee

Personal preference. lol

I usually only hit the Starbucks if I have money to burn and need a good pick me up, otherwise I double brew at home.

Im with you Ive never like Starbucks roasts, including when I was in the coffee business. I will say this though...their blonde roasts are good.

Maybe the 100% Kona your using isn't really 100% Kona? Maybe the roasting was off?

....I'm a cynic when it comes to 'halo' packaging, in addition to "Organic" labels that my wife falls hook, line and sinker for (Whole Foods is the devil). How do you really know it's organic and not some farmer mixing shit in? It's largely a scam, imo.

I can tell you that without a doubt that 100% Kona is the BEST tasting coffee you can get and 10% is nothing compared to the real thing. I've done such taste tests on plantations in Hawaii so I know what's what.

My suggestion is to reconsider your methodology and beans you're using.

There is a local company in the STL area called Kaldi's Coffee which is the only coffee I can drink black, I get their house blend. When I first started drinking coffee, I went to Starbucks mainly b/c of the name, but I can't stand their coffee. I've tried different blends, but it always tastes burnt. This happens when I buy it in the store or brew it at home. Pretty much whenever I buy coffee from a fast food place, always tastes burnt. (Why I keep buying it, I don't know) Buying at a sit down restaurant that isn't a major chain, 50/50 on whether it tastes good or not.

This just in, coffee is a learned taste. 100% Kona is expensive so, most people don't drink it. You could line up cups of Bud Lite and a good Belgian Ale and most people (Americans) would pick the Bud Lite as the "better" beer.

Starbucks Kenyan is an EXCELLENT coffee, and I grown and roast my own coffee for years, so I have a bit of experience. If someone wants a baseline for pretty good coffee, go get a french press of the Kenyan from Startbucks. It is available everywhere, and they somehow keep it fresh.

You're drinking the wrong coffee if you have to add milk/sweetener to enjoy it, imo.

I've never had a coffee that didn't need sweetener or creamer of some kind. Even used all those foo foo coffees and they are all too bitter.

straight black coffee is an acquired taste no matter how expensive the coffee.

I can't emphasize how awesome JBM is when you have a good batch and grind the beans right away. It helps if you have a Jamaican friend who brings over the beans instead of getting a batch sitting in some warehouse for far too long. Incredibly smooth and without a hint of bitterness at all.

Kona can be good, but no way is it as consistent or smooth as Jamaican Blue Mountain.

I sing the praises of JBM in every coffee thread, but it is that damn good.

Never heard of anyone liking JBM, and I know a LOT of coffee roasters.
I got some from Mavis bank - one of the only 3 growers of JBM.
Mavis bank comes in wooden barrels, which is unusual.
I roasted it myself from green beans.
I have even discussed this in depth with Donald Schoenholt, one of the two guys who started the SCAA.
He said,"Its like buying a Mercedes with mushy seats."
