SO i freaked when I saw Anand's article on the new 90nm technology. Not sure if I had too good of a reason to or not... you decide.

Here's my new System...

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ socket 939
MSI neo2 platinum (nforce3 ultra) mobo
2x512 ocz platinum rev 2
(noticing a pattern yet?)
Thermaltake silentcool k8 cooler (same one from anand article)
seagate 160gb sata 7200 rpm drive.

I was able to get close to Anand's settings running stable...

3000+ running @2520 mhz
280 mhz FSB
2.5 4 4 10 1T memory timings
CPU voltage running at 1.472
memory voltage at 1.75

I tried taking the voltages and FSB higher and while it would run and I could get through 3dmark03 ok, it wasn't stable.

I am running an Antec 300w (from the old computer) power supply with a 6800 vanilla... maybe this is why I can't hit Anand's numbers? Either way it's much faster than my old 2000+ thoroughbred that I could only get an 8% overclock out of!! =) So I'm pretty happy. Thoughts anyone? Did I make a huge blunder with this purchase?

Thanks!

nice. good choice. maybe it's your power supply holding you back. it's an antec, but those components should stress the 300 watts pretty well and you might not be getting very stable voltages

Thanks!

I can definitely see the voltages moving around. I'm not sure if it's worth $100 for 100 more mhz though! =)

280 mhz FSB
2.5 4 4 10 1T memory timings

with that ram 2.5-3-3 should be possible.

Very nice BTW

I wouldn't look at it quite that way. Eventually, you're gonna have to break down and buy a PSU that's got more juice than that 300 watter anyway (the way video cards are goin nowadays). You got a good thing goin there, go for broke. IMO

Very nice OC by the way. Have Fun.

I think you guys telling me to buy a PSU are right... I booted my computer up this morning and it went into bios safe mode.. went into the bios and didn't change anything, just exited. Then it booted up ok. My theory is that on initial hard power on, there isn't enough juice in that PSU to pass POST. I don't have any hard evidence, but I can't think of any other reason that it would be doing this as I was able to replicate the problem and solution multiple times.

I just upgraded and have a nice thermaltake 420 watt ps for $25.00 shipped.

Just ordered the thermaltake 480 from newegg. I hope that will do.

As far as temps go, it's running at about 39 C upon bootup. Without the o/c it was at 36 C.

Pretty cool, eh! (no pun intended)

I haven't installed my mobo monitor under windows xp yet but i will tonight so I'll be able to let you know how it looks under load.

Either way though, it's running cooler at bootup than my 2000+ was!

Make sure you update the BIOS, just to make sure those temps are reading correctly.

And I would definitely upgrade the PSU >350W (I would go at least 400-450). Also make sure the 12V rail is >20A or so.

You might also want to up the CPU voltage. You should be safe to 1.6, but increase it in the smallest increments possible.

In any case, that's a great OC.

That's great news for me; my 3200+ 90nm on Neo2 Plat gets in today; I'm thinking 2.65 on water for the max will be nice, probably run 2.5ish constant. Great job either way...another inspiration for 90nm!

Just a quick FYI. The bios was flashed to 1.3 when I read the values above so I think the temps are correct. It seems like the only thing holding the system back is the PSU. We'll see come Friday when it shows up (so long as newegg is as speedy as usual ).;)

I'm running an Antec 430 and it's working great for me. I have heard good things about the Super Flower (TTGI) PSUs though. I ordered this one as a backup when it was on sale for 29.99, but now it's 39.99.

Any OCZ Powerstream will be a solid PSU.

That Enermax referred above is good too. Get more than 24a's on your +12V to be safe really.

Another vote for the Antec 430 true power. I have 2 (not to mention the other 8 Antec PSU's in my house)

When you find something good, you stay with it.
