Just because I'm in IT doesn't mean I should know everything about iPods

couldn't have said it any better myself. I loved it when a co worker comes up and asks me to setup their toaster oven at their desk.

Don't be stupid, us in IT are required by law to have an intimate understanding of the inner workings, the setup and maintenance of, and the skills to repair every single device that utilizes power, either by electrical cable or battery.

This is true. Let me add to that list.

Projectors
Audio\Visual equipment
VCRs
Phones
Teleconferencing
DVD Players
And anything at home that has electric running through it.

Don't forget digital cameras... get that one a lot.

Sometimes I wish I could give these instructions to people when they ask me for help with trivial shit:

1. Don't be a retard.
2. Figure it out.

help desk is not IT/IS.

I beg to differ. IT/IS most commonly IS help desk.

Help Desk is a small component of IT/IS, just like Data, Voice, Security, Sys Admin, etc.

QFT...also help desk dudes tend to think because they know how things work they are suddenly experts/etc.

Sorry kids, that is why guys like me aren't wasting their time fielding phone calls all day.

I provide you a laundry list to work off of, make sure you follow it or I will get some other geek squad flunky to handle.

Well, I wouldn't expect knowledge of such appliances to be part of an IT guy's job description. However, because of their knowledge of computers, I would expect them to have a higher then average knowledge of electronics in general.

Because of this, I would go to an IT guy for personal help with an electronic issue instead of any other worker and hope that he would be friendly and possibly help me out. Kind of like going to ATOT for help instead of a weightlifting messageboard.

Or I'd threaten him...

This may come as a surprise to some of you. Many of us in IT play with computers because we enjoy them and are pretty ignorant of other electronic devices. We dont find other electronic devices terribly fascinating. And we arent fascinated when asked about these devices we care nothing about by people who think we know about them because they are eletronic.

😉

I probably get this question every week, "I just bought an ipod. Can you tell me how to set it up?". I just tell them I don't know but you'll need itunes to load your music. But honestly I hate ipods so I refuse to learn how to set them up.

Of course they all respond back with, "You're in IT. You should know this stuff." Um, no I don't. I'm sure if I sat down with one for 10 minutes I can easily figure it out but I've never owned one nor will I ever. If it's a chick asking me and she's pretty hot I'll be incline to help her out but if you're ugly or a guy, go RTFM.

OMG THIS.

I haven't used windows daily for at least 7-8 years. I know XP a little because I used it actively for about a year before switching to Linux/BSD for my desktop across the board, but I HATE when people ask me to fix their windows computer and I have no idea how. Or I forget so it takes me twice as long. But most of the time it just ends up being msconfig edits and registry edits to get rid of crap.

Thanks for letting me bitch, too.

I think that sums up a lot of IT folks, myself included. Most electronic gadgets don't interest me at all.

I would replace "iPod" with "cell phone". People bother me all the time asking me 'ow to perform certain task with their cellphones.

Didn't the mod's tell you to stop that?

IIRC not listening to mod requests are grounds for perma bans....

QFT...and this is fucking annoying. I also don't how to use every program or PC component on the face of the earth just because I work in IT.

it's not your fleshlight. they have no electronic parts.

This is how my parents are. They think I should know how to work everything electronic right off the bat just because I'm pretty good with computers. It really gets on my nerves.
