Just another AGP video card thread

Guys,

I have an older mobo:
Asus P4s533
P4 running at 2.4 GHz
1 Gig ram
Xp/home/sp2
Old video card is Leaktek Winfast 3d GeForce2 MX with drivers dated Oct. 2004.

The problem I just encountered is that Google Earth is jerky in openGL and lots of artifacts in directX. So I figure I need a new AGP video card to get acceptable performance.

No games on this machine (.. well, very few!). Mostly browsing, email, Excel, digital imaging and some photo editing.

I don't need the latest/greatest/priciest. What would you suggest for good value?
My search here mostly turns up requests that are mainly geared to gaming. I don't think I need that much power (and price).

I'm thinking of spending around $100.

Any suggestions?

a 6600 with the DDR2 ram (if they make them for AGP, i'm not 100% sure about that) would be perfect if you don't mind overclocking, or a 9800 pro...those would allow you to game quite nicely...or a 6600GT if you don't mind spending a little more :)

You have very few options at that price. There is the FX 5200, the Radeon 9200, and the GF 6200, among cards made in the past year. Of older cards still in the marketing channel, the range is much richer, but way too hard to work with for suggestions purposes. If you were happy with your MX 400, there is a "side-grade" (not upgrade, truly) to an MX4000 that might cost less than $50, and be optimized for newer drivers that could be the difference you need now, but I wouldn't wish that piece of crap off on a poor second cousn with bad breath that I didn't like much.

To the earlier respondent, there never has been a GF 6600 prices at $100 new that I have ever seen advertised. But all of the GF 6xxx's, with the exception of the new GS, have been sold as both AGP and PCI-e.

Kiwi,

Thanks for the response.

Would there be any benefit using one of these 9600 cards (see url below) over the 9200 card you suggested? Since I only have a 4x AGP slot, the 6600 boards wouldn't work for me, I don't believe.

Should I be concerned if a card offers openGL 1.3 and another offers openGL 2.0? They all offer 128 bit interfaces and directX 9.0.

I tried to tiny URL this but was unable to do so.

i'd suggest a used 9700 pro if you don't mind used...and i'm sure 6600s are less than 100 even in AGP flavour...even ones with DDR1 will pwn a 9600...

Used 9700 Pro sounds good to me, I'll second that suggestion...It'll probably keep up with any 6600 more or less, and you'll even have the power for a little light gaming. I sold mine for $140 about 16 months ago, so I'd think you should have no problems finding a used one under $100 these days.

I'll go ahead and third the 9700Pro/9800Pro recommendation.

Also if you are hell bent on buying a 9600 card from Newegg, DO NOT GET THE 9600SE cards... Far as I can tell the SE stands for (*h*tty edition) I made that mistake and it is basically a rebranded 9200. Snatch up a 9600 Pro or XT if you really want to go that route. However I would strongly recommend scouring eBay or the FS/T Forum for a good deal on a 9800/9700Pro card.

For $100, a used 9800 Pro is probably the best bet. I seen them in FS/FT for as low as $80 shipped.

The 4x and 8X AGP are not mutually exclusive. It was only the First series AGP that would be incompatible, and the slot was changed to keep you from putting the newer cards in the older slots. The Radeon 9600 is a decent enough card when you can get it for $100.

I dont' like the console-like jumping running shooting twitch fests, which in my book includes most FPS games. I've kept up with the cards somewhat, but can't be sure I remember what the various OpenGL stuff represents. I've been on a tight PC parts budget for at least three years now, so I only recently felt that I could afford a new(er) video card than my Ti-200, on which I couldn't immediately find a new fan for the frozen one. I picked up a 9700 Pro from eBay for $60 that works nicely, and an FX 5900 that cost a little more, for another system, both fairly recently.

My fastest PC is still a Socket A XP system, and no game I like strains it.

Guys... resurrecting this thread.... I never got around to doing anything about a video card. Meanwhile, my monitor died and I'm looking to move from a CRT to an LCD (Sammy 970P perhaps).

How would you rate this card from NewEgg?
http://tinyurl.com/9xskq

I've kept an eye open for used 9800pro's there and found some in the 100-110 range... but if I can get a new retail 6600GT for $113/ar... well that sounds like an attractive deal unless there's a good reason not to get the 6600GT card.

Thoughts?

I see there are some reports of this card overheating and locking up the PC. Is this a common problem with high performance video cards? Just an anomaly?

I don't like Aopen in Gen.. Get some more common brands like,, Leadtek (Winfast), MSI, EVGA, Saph, .

I try to stay away from Abits, Aopen, any no name hk companies, and ASUS cuz they're A holes and are overpriced

Get 9800pro or 6600
If you had $100 more you could have gottern a really nice card like a x800 GTO .

Why does everyone recommend cards faster than mine when he won't game?

Find a 9200 or up like a 9500 or 9600... whatever is cheap on the FS/FT forum. No point in spending that much money. My bro got a used 9600Pro for $40... and that would be plenty of power for the OP.

Thanks for the input guys. My situation has changed slightly since the OP. Now that I need to also replace the monitor, I'll be looking for DVI out from the video card. Does that change my inexpensive options?

For $8 more, it offers OpenGL 2.0

Check this comparison out:

Any thoughts?

I would like this question answered too. What is the difference between OpenGL 1.3/4/5 or 2.0?

I haven't had much luck in the FS/FT section finding a card that hasn't already been sold.

So here's what I'm considering:
Sapphire 9800pro for $127
http://tinyurl.com/dk5b2

VisionTek 9600XT for $115
http://tinyurl.com/bybgc

or eVGA 6600GT for $119
http://tinyurl.com/ajpys

For my (un)demanding usage, would any one of these 3 be any less than overkill? I'm really thinking the 9800pro or the 6600GT over the 9600XT. But they're all so much more capable than my GF2 MX!

Would the 9800pro run cooler and more reliably than the 6600GT?

For all practical purposes, they are priced the same. So cost is not a factor here.

Thanks.

Edit: My PS is a 300 wt unit (originally used with an AMD 1 GHz Thunderbird processor).

Thanks and sorry for thread jacking if I did. :)
