BTW, how many of you know that the Explorer was originally designed and built upon a station-wagon frame?

and your point is? not many of the SUV's were built on truck frames.

false. explorer was originally a trim package for the F150.

and the F150 was based off a station-wagon?

heh

Actually, the original Ford Explorer was based off of the Ford Ranger. Chevy did the same when it based the S-10 Blazer off of the S-10 pickup.

Regardless, as a mid-size pickup truck, the Ranger had a fairly narrow wheel base. Its just what you get with smaller vehicles. Combined with the high ground clearance demanded by customers for off-road use, you get a vehicle with a high center of gravity.

Anyone who has taken high school physics can tell you that a top heavy vehicle has a greater chance of flipping in an accident. Of course, all vehicles have a chance of flipping. Its just greater when the ratio or height to wheel base width gets out of hand.

I don't think Ford should be liable. If people had problems with the design of vehicles, they should have brought it up with the DOT or called their local Congressional representative. Rewriting vehicle saftey laws through litigation is a mistake. Nobody will know how far beyond current saftey laws they should go. Company A might get sued because it didn't go as far as Company B. Of course, I'd ask why you didn't buy Company B's product to begin with.

Oh yes, that's right... CrippleGal liked the leather interior of Company A's vehicle better. I hope those limp legs slide across leather better now.

your analogy is wrong.

what happened in the ford case is more like, someone tried to do back hand springs down the stairs knowing full well that those stairs were more slippery than the average stairs to start off with and slipped. in which case it would be ENTIRELY the womans fault.

she was attempting a high speed manuever that she simply should not have done in a vehicle which had a higher center of gravity than the average car.
Do you know this for sure? I'd like someone to post a link explaining that the woman jerked the wheel very hard. What if she barely swerved and the conditions were just right for the car to flip, but with the minor changes to the SUV made in the future, it would have not flipped.

because if what you say were true, there would be more incidents of Explorer roll overs. that is all the empirical evidince that is necessary. Ford Explorer has been the #1 or #2 selling SUV since it's inception 15 or so years ago. during that period of time, the rate of deaths from Explorer rollovers is less than that of many other vehicles. that alone is proof that the Explorer meets the standards of the average vehicle.

no. late 70s early 80s F150 trim package called 'explorer,' sorta like how they have 'eddie bauer' models today

Stupid greedy focking woman.

The SUV passed all the tests and stuff and if there is a major problem she should be awarded some money but NO WHERE NEAR THAT MUCH. I don't get how a car that passed all these tests can be sued for anything like this?

Koing

what part of "JURY awards a woman..." dont you understand.

Okay I didn't read that part then. My bad.

BUT wtf is up with her offering to take $100 mill off if they re-design it?

Still a joke imo.

The car passed those tests but she screwed the driving up some how (big assumption). Like me buying a product that passed it's test but then did something extreme and I get hurt!

RE: REDSHIRT

ok guys... so hes saying that car companies MUST do everything humanly possible to make a safer car or they will get sued. so by law car companies should only be manufacturing tank-like vehicles that go a max of 20 mph (because im sure car companies know that higher speed increase severity of accidents). but hold on... if two tanks hit each other at 20 mph.... someone might still get hurt... so they have to go bigger and slower. with that amazingly dumb logic all they should stop making all sports cars too, im sure people know that the car companies know it is generally much safer to be in a boat (like a lincoln towncar). it makes no sense.

oh yeah... i knock iowa state because you used it in a way (indicated by your connotation) to say you were smarter than everyone else in here. i know you stated that you knew you would be flamed and that you knew people would think that you were being condescending, therefore you at least had a good idea of how you were using the statement. you knew what you were implying and you just released the warning so that you could have a basis to defend yourself when someone called you on it. its like if someone says, "im a veternaian, but im not too much of an expert on bears, but bears are hot pink." he says it hoping no one will call him on his retarded statement but in case someone does... he can always say "well i stated that 'im not too much of an expert on bears". (yeah i know thats a crappy analogy but it works) if you didnt want to sound condescending... you shouldnt have mentioned it, and by your statement, you knew that. if you are going to try to claim to be an expert (or in your case a semi-expert), sound like it and back up your statements with proof.

and no, im not claiming to be an expert, my opinions are based on commons sense.

oh no guys, we better listen to him, he has an ancient supercomputer at his school. good job.... that computer must make you smarter and you must be very proud. i work between a supercomputer the size of 1.5 football fields, 2 insanely large NMR (bubble) labs, and at least 30 other large labs... does that make me any smarter? am i going to absorb some of the brain power around there through osmosis (well i guess diffusion)? NO. does your supercomputer do that?

Anyone who thinks u and ur are words does not have the right to question anyone else's intelligence. Just how it goes. You look like a somewhat dull garden snail when you type like that.

Would the people here that think she is validated list the kind of car you drive please? Also, I just can't understand that much money for a SUV flipping when getting yanked to the side very hard. If you want a flip resiliant vehicle, buy a damn car or learn how to drive better. Jerking the steering wheel=noes. Anyway, I can understand maybe medical expenses but punitive damages...no

OMG, you accused me of pretending to be an engineer. I felt I had to explain that I was! Geesh. Whatever man.

Anyways. Screw this thread. No one has an open mind.

I ADMIT that if she jerked the wheel hard then she should get NOTHING. We just don't know. I assumed that it was more of a fault of the vehicle, not hers, but we don't know this. Shees. All this name calling and flaming is why I barely ever make an appearance in OT threads. Impossible to have a civilized discussion. I never resorted to name calling and calling people retarded and the such. All I tried to do is explain how this verdict could have been reached.

Anyways, you guys go on complaining and flaming about stuff that doesn't even matter. I'm done with OT.

And thanks to everyone that tells me "don't let the door hit you on the way out" or any stupid remark as the such. Never have I seen such a negative board as Anandtech OT.

Ford shouldnt fix it, they should hit her neck with a crow bar,
finish the job god wanted to do but couldnt SINCE A FORD EXPLORER IS SO FRIGGIN SAFE!!!! IF IT WERE ANY OTEHR CAR, SHE WOULD BE DEAD AS THAT SNAKE JCL KILLED IN THE OTHER THREAD!! AND SHES SUEING EM FOR THAT!! SMITE HER WHOEVER IS UP THERE!!!

if the car meets all federal standards, then it's the government's fault for not requiring a higher standard. also, $300+ million for a personal injury? i know it's a very unfortunate accident, but it's setting a bad precedent. sure we all want safer cars, but what good does it do to make an automaker go bankrupt before they can do any improvement. yeah, she's going to knock off $100 million, wtf is she going to do with $200 million? spend a million a year, no, i think she needs to spend at least $5 million a year to spend every penny of it.

RedShirt- if it the engineers code of ethics is to first and foremost do public good even if it means their job, then if there were a single engineer from the previous generation design team still working for ford your point would be moot, correct? I must say I never say a dateline episode or newspaper article about the entire engineering team walking out en masse. Personally I think you are getting hung up on one small issue.

Anyways, I hope they take the woman up on the hundred million dollar offer by sending out a letter to every owner saying something to the effect of -

"Read the big F-ing orange sticker before you put on your makeup"

Thank you
The Ford Motor Company

Don't take it so hard, they are just trying to defend themselves because they feel so low for falling under the Brainwashing spell of the Giant SUV making Corporate Thugs in buying these behemoths.
