I played football in high school and after all this new information and how bad it's getting I won't want my son(s) playing this sport after 8th grade. I'll try to push them (if they like it atleast) to play basketball, baseball or golf. Something much easier on the body.

crazy. must have had some skeletons in his closet. always wondering how people so successful could be so screwed up inside that they would do something like this.

boredom? I mean seriously, you run out of ideas to do with your life and you get bored boom kill yourself. Makes sense to me.

Gunshot wound to chest.

He probably hid concsussions and wanted his brain autopsied. Concussions are much worse for you than previously thought, even small ones. New information is always coming out on this.

Another athlete did the same thing a few months back. Suicide by shot to chest, keeping brain intact for autopsy.

Having your brain rattling around your skull is bad for it.

Whoda thunk that?

All the sports radio talk shows are gushing over themselves saying how it's a tragic event for the entire NFL and all sports. I don't want to sound harsh, and I feel horrible for his family, but I don't feel that bad about it where I"m going to spend time reflecting on it and really caring.

There are people who have it FAR worse than him with no money, terminal illness, etc. and don't take their own lives. I'm sure there are also people everyday who commit suicide. I didn't know anything about him other than he was a good football player....So ya, it's sad, but let's not make this into a nationwide cry fest with candle-light services around the country while we all pretend that we actually knew anything about him.

It was Dave Duerson (one of my favorite safeties ever) and I believe he left a suicide note donating his brain to science and asking them to please examine it.

Apparently he shot himself in the chest, so his brain is intact...I'm sure whoever the NFL contracts to study these things will have plenty to look at.

Sadly, my first thought when I heard he died of a gunshot was "did he shoot himself in the chest?" This is really, really, sad and horrible. No sport, no matter how entertaining, is worth having this kind of thing happen.

I don't care if it ruins football as we know it, head hits need to be removed from the game altogether, or I may have to find a new favorite sport. I'm not sure I want to encourage that, even if the players are willing participants. I know this is a visceral reaction to the death of a player that I was particularly fond of, and we'll see if I really have the guts to do something like that when the season starts.

My wife and I were just debating about my son (8 years old) playing flag football later this year. He plays basketball, soccer and baseball, all very well (He has a GREAT basketball coach 😉).

She does not want him to play even flag football because she knows he will be good at it and she does not want him to like it, thus leading to later issues with denying him from playing tackle football.

I am starting to think she may be on to something.

When this head injury stuff started coming out, I decided that I wouldn't let my kids play football until they are 16, unless there are major changes to the sport by then. Not because I think it'll reduce the chance of head trauma, but because at that age I'll be able to sit down and explain the risks to them, and they can make their own decision.

I found the drive-over-the-cliff accident suspicious, now I'm thinking that was intentional

he was a great player

Law & Order SVU did an episode about a former star QB with CTE who killed himself the same way after he got off on rape charges. It was very disturbing to see them enact some of the CTE symptoms. Such a sad situation.

oh and RIP. He was one of the best LB's ever.

I saw that episode. It was probably one of the most powerful SVU episode I've seen.

This is terrible news indeed. I always thought he seemed like a cool dude. I can't remember a time when I heard him badmouthing another player.

Hope he finds the peace he was looking for...

R.I.P.

My son isn't even 2 yet...but I've already thought about it. Accidents can happen anywhere, anytime (thus being...accidents). But there is nothing accidental about the kind of head trauma these guys get. I will certainly steer our son towards other sports if he is interested. And if he wants to play football I will make sure he has all the facts (especially going past the HS level).

Oh, just shut the fuck up. Dementia is one of the worst ways you can die, period. I've seen it first hand. I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

This. CTE is a terminal illness in a sense. There is no recovery. There is brain degradation over time(sometimes short, sometimes not so short), where you first lose your mind, and eventually it leads to death because your mind is completely gone. You stop functioning. Only artificial means(feeding tubes, hydration, eventually ventilators) keeps you alive. There is no reversing it, not right now, probably not ever.

Also to comment on the other persons post. Poor uneducated people with termianl illnesses rarely kill themselves. Educated Upper Middle Class or Rich people with terminal illnesses are the most likely to committ suicide.

Rest in peace Junior. My thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family. I have fond memories of the '94 Super Bowl team and it is sad to see another member of that great team pass away. Hopefully through research, CTE will be preventable in the future so no one else will have to suffer this fate.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnnnndddddddddddddd I don't give a fuck. But I've had some drink, and so I will post in this topic. Do not confuse this for caring, just because I took the time to post, this could have been any topic.

So a couple Smirnoff Ice makes you a complete asshole void of humanity?

Next time you are looking down at your sock you grabbed to unload in after watching some crappy youporn stream, and the insta-guilt hits you, just think about how worthless you are to this world.

If a female is ever unlucky enough to find herself with you in old age, there is a very good chance that one of you will deteriorate mentally and not have the balls to end it early.

Enjoy.

-You're the second person tonight that felt like anything you say, think or do will ever matter. So what, some guy is dead, all the people that know him will one day be dead and it will be as though their thoughts and emotions never existed . All the people in this thread will die and eventually everything will be dead and this conversation will have never happened as the universe decays into a timeless, spaceless heat soup.

Take a hit and stop taking life so seriously, for the sake of the people around you. Appreciate the humor in every aspect of life.

I am an athiest as well, and I very well know we all end up in the same place we were before we were born......nowhere.

However, even most athiests want to live a comfortable life while we are here, knowing that there is no bull-shit party in the sky as long as we apoligize to the sky-fairy after we commit a "sin,"

You give us a bad name when you minimalize the obvious suffering of a human being.

Since we all end up carbon in the end anyway, why even bother with life? We are both still here for some reason. We haven't ended it. Jr. did.

He probably hid concsussions and wanted his brain autopsied. Concussions are much worse for you than previously thought, even small ones. New information is always coming out on this.

Another athlete did the same thing a few months back. Suicide by shot to chest, keeping brain intact for autopsy.

^This.

I was shocked when I heard this news. He was very young and hasn't been out of the league very long. My first thought was that he was in terrible debt, but I think it goes beyond that.

With a blast to the chest, I think he was trying to preserve his brain for study as Dave Duerson did just last year.

NO IT WASN'T!

This type of shit happens all the time. Fuck pro football.

I'm with you now.

It's time to end the barbaric practice of full-contact sports.

Sorry, not going that far. More government regulation is NOT what is needed in life. These athletes know the risks going into it.

The only thing I will say is that the NFL needs to provide veterans with top-notch medical care.

Junior played many many years of professional football. A kid playing a few years of high school ball isn't a big deal.
No.
Friend of mine, two blown up knees and he's never been out of pain from them.
Another friend had an unlucky stomp that killed one of his kidneys completely.
Neither of those were head injuries but both guys live with that for nothing. Way to go kid, thanks for your efforts.
