"WikiLeaks' founder Julian Assange has taken refuge in the Ecuador Embassy in London and has asked for political asylum, Ecuador's foreign minister said on Tuesday.


"Ecuador is studying and analyzing the request," Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino told reporters in the capital Quito.

The Ecuador Embassy issued the following statement:

"This afternoon Mr Julian Assange arrived at the Ecuadorian Embassy seeking political asylum from the Ecuadorian government.

As a signatory to the United Nations Universal Declaration for Human Rights, with an obligation to review all applications for asylum, we have immediately passed his application on to the relevant department in Quito.

While the department assesses Mr Assange's application, Mr Assange will remain at the embassy, under the protection of the Ecuadorian Government.

The decision to consider Mr Assange's application for protective asylum should in no way be interpreted as the Government of Ecuador interfering in the judicial processes of either the United Kingdom or Sweden."

I don't blame him. He wouldn't be in this situation if it hadn't been for pressure from the US. Plus, Ecuador had offered asylum before, this is them just saying 'eat a dick' to the ever hypocritical US government.
 
Julian is certainly a controversial person.

And with the publication of the State Department Memos, he is certainly unpopular with US government bureaucrats. What isn't clear is whether or not being unpopular with US government bureaucrats is an international crime.

If I understand it correctly, a pair of Swedish Nationals, one with ties to the CIA, has accused Julian of "Surprise Sex."

Note that Julian has not even been indicted! But a Swedish Prosecutor wants to extradite him so that he can question Julian. Why the prosecutor can't take a taped deposition isn't clear.

If I understand it correctly, Julian maintains that the "surprise sex" situation is merely a ruse so that Sweden can turn him over to US authorities. Consequently, he has refused to cooperate.

Interesting.

Would very much like to hear from anyone that understands the political situations in Sweden or Ecuador.

They're sure going after him hard for a "sexual misconduct" charge. Hell, he's just wanted for questioning. I'm not a big fan of conspiracies but I can see him as having a lot of enemies in high places.

NSA would've black bagged him years ago if he was a real threat; probably should've raped fewer chicks.
 
I'm just saying it seems fishy. Doesn't mean it is. But... I mean, why isn't Roman Polanski being pursued to the same degree? Same crime.

This is the guy who leaked the names of people in Iraq who helped the US soldiers. Those people were targeted afterwards. This guy should be thrown to the wolves.
 
I'll give him asylum. I have an extra bedroom. Sadly I live in the USA, a nation whos government views him as an enemy. I don't much care for mister Assange, but seriously gets a bum wrap. Just because a man is a douche doesn't mean he deserves the way he's being treated by giant governments.

Just a note.

It was Bradley Manning that leaked the information.

Julian published it. Legally, the distinction is important.

For example, The New York Times published the secret Pentagon Papers. They were never indicted. Wikileaks is claiming the same protection.

The legal question of whether or not a website can claim the same legal protection as a newspaper is an important legal question. Unfortunately, questionable "Surprise Sex" acquisitions don't provide any legal clarity.

Tell me though, since the leaked information was allegedly so valuable, why were the people that authorized its distribution it in such a vulnerable manner never disciplined?

Why was a single specialist able to download and distribute a half a gigabyte of sensitive "classified" information without any one in authority noticing?

Maybe we miss the point here, regardless if we punish ole Julian Assange or not, and place burning bamboo splinters under his fingernails as a toture example for others, it won't change the fact that the damage to USA credibility is already done.

As any nation that lies to the world, will be outed by whistle blowers. The damage is already done and it only stupidity to assume punishing Julian Assange will deter future US whistle blowers.

That and one of them bragged about it afterwards on twitter (which she tried to delete after she found out about the other girl he slept with). And it wasn't even 'rape' that they're accusing him of, they're accusing him of taking off his condom during sex.

Leave it conservatives to get the facts wrong, as usual.

Not a US citizen, broke no US laws in the US. Is not an "enemy combatant".

I predict that he will end up in a US prison at some point, to be held indefinitely without due process.

Given what I already posted....crimes against the US count. If you steal US documents, doesn't matter where you were when you stole them. Still a crime in the US. I'd LOVE to see him thrown in jail for a long time to rot.

Totally different situation. Polanski was actually living in the US and while living here broke laws of the State of California. He fled the country in the middle of the legal proceedings and has managed to avoid extradition ever since.

Unless I am wrong Assange never lived in the US, owes no loyalty to the US, received US documents from various people that had access to those documents while he was living in countries other than the US and then published those documents on the web. He is under no obligation to respect US law unless he is in the US anymore than I am under an obligation to respect the laws of the UK unless I am actually in the UK. We may be able to bully our way into getting our hands on him but that does not make it right in my mind anymore than our going into Panama to "arrest" Noriega for violating US drug laws was right and I suspect we will come to realize the folly of this the day that some country manages to kidnap a US citizen on our soil and return him to their country for violating their laws.
