Even being a Christian myself, I still believe the judge overstepped her authority.

Do I think it's wise to name your kid "Messiah"? No. Is it illegal? No. I just don't think it's a good idea for the benefit of the child and how they'll be treated by others.

The kid isn't my "messiah", nor is the President for that matter, so I take no offense at it.

Heck, anybody remember the original movie "Dune"? Lots of religious words in there like messiah, jihad, holy war, etc. I don't recall people getting in a huge fuss over that.

Taking this one step further, for purposes of consistency, I just gotta ask this question then:

Why is it NOT acceptable to name a kid "Messiah" but it IS acceptable to name a kid "Jesus"?

"Jesus" is a traditional name and "Messiah" is not? Messiah is a noun. It'd be like naming your kid "President" or "Honorable" or "Table."

Even leftists should agree that those kinds of names are pretty fucking stupid.

That said, I am a big proponent for personal choice, but in this case, the choice affects the kid for life, and thus it can't be considered a personal choice.

That is terrible reasoning. How many kids over the centuries have hated their names. Letting the government get involved in naming a child is a horrible overstep of their mandate.

Gubmint better get busy if it's going to rename all of those kids.

I do think if a name is offensive enough the government should step in for the well being of a child, but I don't think Messiah is over that line even without taking into consideration that it's growing in popularity.
This. No different really than naming a child 'Jesus' or 'Muhammad.'

My wife's uncle was named "General John". He was drafted in the Korean war and killed as a corporal - how's that for confusing?

"Hi, I'm General Lyke. I'm your new corporal."

"Uh, what?"

There's a difference between being named "Gertrude" and hating your name and being named "Loser" and hating your name.

That is a very good point. There are at least two women name "Shithead" (pronounced "sha-theed") in Chattanooga. In my book that constitutes grounds for justifiable matricide.

Looks like she is trying to prevent discrimination against the child.

But wait. If judges keep trashy parents from giving their children stupid names then lefties will not be able to get butt-hurt over racism.

U say wat?

Um hello?

Judge Reinhold --> http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001662/

Prince --> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince_(musician)

There's two very famous people whose first name is also a title or noun! Plenty of precedent for the purpose of this discussion, the first more so than the latter.

I wasn't aware that stage names were legal names now. Your first guy was born Edward Ernest Reinhold Jr.

The other guy is African American and was born Prince Rogers Nelson, which pretty much is what we're talking about here. The fact that he was able to make something of himself is incidental...he pretty much had to be completely insane for it to work.

Far as I'm concerned this Judge has no standing.

yeah.

Also, there's a shitload of people in this world that don't believe anyone has ever earned that title.

you know...religion and all. everyone of them being equally right and equally wrong.

I have heard some much worse names. I have a neighbor who made up out of the blue two of their three kids' names.
