How are you going to boycott the "amazing" game that you "can't wait to start playing?"

Don't get me wrong, BF 2142 sucks, and the spyware is going too far. And I fully support this idea of a boycott, also to add that I myself am in.
HOWEVER ... all this effort, and all the confirmations from us won't even have any effect whatsoever, considering that EA already has made money with it. It MIGHT be giving them a lesson for the NEXT game they make, to never include any sort of spyware nor ads in-game, and that I'd wish so. But as I said, as far as BF 2142 is concerned I think it's kinda too late. I'm not sure if even a "loss" of $100,000 from any boycott(s) would scratch their ego at all nor influence the decisive minds at the administration.
I don't know, in my local Bloated Buy I've seen tons of BF2142 games on the shelf instead of empty like I remember the BF2 ones. Are we going to sack EA? No. Are we going to Change the world? No. But as consumerists all we can use is our purchasing power to really get through to companies. Some protests don't work, but as time goes by those protests are remembered to be against an idea that a lot of people thought was bad, therefore possibly preventing its re-occurence.Originally posted by: Zenoth

Well put. I don't think other companies will turn to those methods since not all games warrant advertising.Originally posted by: Fike
I will probably play it too, but what pisses me off the most is the product placement in the game. Can't I go anywhere without seeing some marketing scam jammed down my throat. Now that the advertising industry is losing revenue due to Tivo/DVRs and Internet TV, the entire media industry is looking for a new method of paying for our entertainment.
In television, the commodity being sold is viewers; the customers are advertisers. This market dynamic results in media that caters to the lowest common denominator. Advertisers just want to have the eyeballs of the public. Product quality suffers because the customer is not to public. We don't drive the industry.
With product placement and in game advertising, we are going to move to that same paradigm. The gamer will cease to be the customer. Our interests will be secondary to the interests of Proctor and Gamble, Coke, and, Pfizer.
Why can't we just pay for the games and keep the advertisers out. If commercials start popping up in computer games, I will stop playing games just as I have stopped watching television. I will not be a commodity that is bought and sold.
