name two roles where he's the "same" character. In almost every movie he's in, he's not "Jonny Depp."

That's true acting. Compare it w/ deniro. Always that same head shaking demeanor. Pacino, always that handsinpocket, hunched fierce badass look. Joe pesci, it's always has to be that short new yorker.
tom cruise, always that wierd my-spine-is-a-stick walk w/ hands moving everywhere.

Now, Johnny Depp, every movie, he's always someone totally different. That's acting.

Exactly. Every movie he does, he's a completely different persona.

Watch Benny & Joon - Depp is hillarious in that movie...yet he hardly has any spoken lines compared to the rest of the cast. That movie will show you why he is such a good actor. Depp is an extremely good character actor...not many other actors out there you can compare him to in that respect.

Watch Pirates and Chocolate Factory.
It's like he truely is a different person, even physically (although that's not hugely hard with make-up).
I know someone who had seen Pirates and didn't realise Depp was Wonka.

I've seen Pirates, but not Chocolate Factory, although my girlfriend has- she agrees that he's a totally different person.
I was watching his biography on the 'box the other night, and it was explaining how he throws himself into each role, and completely changes himself each time. Fascinating guy.

Well, the reason I think he is such a great actor - and plenty of others have said the same - is that he can play so many different roles and you can believe him in every one. Sure, not all of those movies are good, but overall, he is just great.

Too often actors and actresses are put in different roles and you just can't take them seriously.

I have been trying to figure out why people like him so much. I accept that women think he's good looking and that's why some of them like him no matter what kind of actor he is. My friends seem to get offended when I don't agree that he's a wonderful actor... maybe I just haven't seen him at his best. I thought The Ninth Gate was horrible, and I didn't think he did anything to make it any better. I didn't think he was anything special in What Eating Gilbert Grape, although I did like the movie. I didn't think his performance in Chocolat was memorable. I liked Edward Scissorhands, but I don't think he brought anything to the movie that someone else couldn't have.

Can someone recommend one of his movies where I could see him at his best so maybe I understand what the big deal is about?

I thought him fitting for his role in Pirates of the Caribbean...

I agree. He's not a typical hollywood blohard who worries most about his image in a film. He's not afraid to take risks and do unusual films and characters, he just does what he likes, and works his @ss off to do it extremely well. I have a lot of respect for that.

I thought The Ninth Gate was awesome. Depp is just good at "acting" in my opinion.

Are you joking? I think he sucks fecal matter out of my @ss just so he can spit it back up onto the big screen. But maybe thats just me....

You and your homosexual tendencies just want Johnny Depp to suck your ass.
