Johnny Depp... I don't get it...

The Nineth Gate wasn't one of his better roles, but I don't think that it was his fault.

I think he did a great job in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and in Pirates of the Carribean.

Ed Wood is one of my all-time favorite movies, and Depp perfectly nailed the boundless enthusiasm of the character who loves his craft, so much that he can't see that he's terrible at it.

The movie had everything else working for it too: script, direction, co-stars, music and sets. But I can't think of any other actor who would have fit that part so well.

PULL THE STRINGS!!! PULL THE STRINGS!!!!

great movie!

"Let me hear him call Boris Karloff a f***ing asshole..."

He never plays a "normal" role, and he always plays them well. Of actors born after 1950, he is among the best.

johnny depp is one of a handful of actors who splits his time between moneymaking blockbusters and smaller, arty films, where he can flex his acting chops or just have fun. at least half of the movies he has been in you have probably never heard of, and i'm talking about fairly recent movies, too. nicholas cage is another actor who can fvcking ACT, but half of his movies are mindless crap where he doesn't even try.

i'm a straight male, and i still think depp is the best actor of his generation. if you didn't think he was brilliant in edward scissorhands, you simply have nothing valid to say about movies. that's like saying orsen wells was nothing special in "citizen kane." he was BORN for that role.

the ninth gate sucked ass. so did astronaut's wife, and a number of other movies he has been in. but that doesn't make him a poor actor.

besides, anyone who hung out with the smashing pumpkins pretty much rules. 😉

There was something really hot about him in Pirates.

Um .. attractive men with affected accents and heavy eye shadow 😀

I read somewhere that he studied one of the Rolling Stones (Keith Richards I think) when preparing for the role. He wanted that strutting, arrogant, bad-boy rocker personna to add character and depth, rather than just play it as the stereotypical pirate.

I have been trying to figure out why people like him so much. I accept that women think he's good looking and that's why some of them like him no matter what kind of actor he is. My friends seem to get offended when I don't agree that he's a wonderful actor... maybe I just haven't seen him at his best. I thought The Ninth Gate was horrible, and I didn't think he did anything to make it any better. I didn't think he was anything special in What Eating Gilbert Grape, although I did like the movie. I didn't think his performance in Chocolat was memorable. I liked Edward Scissorhands, but I don't think he brought anything to the movie that someone else couldn't have.

Can someone recommend one of his movies where I could see him at his best so maybe I understand what the big deal is about?

I thought him fitting for the role in Pirates of the Carribean...

A gay, drunk pirate? Yup, fit the role pretty well.

He wasn't acting gay in that movie at all. Lot's of people just don't get it.. He was stumbling around all funny while on dry land. While on a boat, he'd stand perfectly still and stable.. Awesome movie and awesome acting.

Yup, all that and a little nutty too--the way he disappointingly doesn't seem to have played Willy Wonka...

Look at the List of his films. They'll give you a good idea how good an actor he is and how versatile.

It's an impressive list. Also, he takes roles where he's not the star but has a small role and even roles where you wouldn't recognize him as in Before Night Falls.

I'm looking forward to Shantaram - good book, but have to wait 'til 2007.

I was skeptical about the movie "From Hell" before I popped it in the player and gave it a chance. Depp was pretty good in it, and the movie itself was suprisingly good considering I wasn't too enthused about it.

not all women think he is good looking.

he is an not-ugly, decent.. at best.. actor who is the biggest hypocrit amoungst many hypocrits in his field.

if he never ever made another movie again, many of us would not care... but then again, we dont care if he does make more movies.

AAARRRRRRRR you crazy?

I thought Donnie Brasco was great, his recent movies are ok. He might not be the best actor but hes different in every role, refreshing since you dont know what to expect. Cool Depp or looney Depp 😀

He's not the typical actor that just acts in big budget Hollywood movies (like Orlando Bloom). He goes and does whatever movie tickles his fancy or are off-the-cuff and original.

To bad he openly hates America and swore never to come here unless filming a movie..

It is kind of funny that he doesn't mind making all his money here though. The little prick lives in France, that figures.

He just takes interesting roles and does a good job of bringing them to life.

Edward Scissorhands
Ed Wood
Cry-baby
Sleepy Hollow
Donnie Brasco
Pirates of the Carribean

He's not the the Best. Actor. Ever! but he makes most of the movies he's in more interesting to watch, just like Val Kilmer and Christopher Walken.

i wondered when someone would mention crybaby. i agree with dave, and would add john malkovich(sp?) to that list.

I cant believe no one said Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

Granted the movie was kind of weird, (maybe even bad), but he certainly did his job as an actor.

Me neither!
Depp was Fear & Loathing. He absolutely owned* that role, and played it better than anyone else could have. IMHO, his finest moment.

* Couldn't think of a better word, it's not leet-speek 😛
