It looks decent: http://www.avclub.com/articles/john-carter,70551/. I trust avclub and a 'B' from them means it will be better than your average shitty action movie.

Apparently, this movie has everyone at Disney scared shitless, because it's expected to bomb at the BO. I've been pretty resentful of it because it almost got Johnny Depp's Lone Ranger film killed.

I heard it was not the best movie, but that the effects and stuff are amazing. Makes me think of Avatar. Avatar was entertaining, but I don't consider it great. The effects were definitely cool though.

He's 7, so he could care less about the plot as long as it looks cool. If it can at least halfway keep my interest, it's worth it. I'll give it a go tomorrow and report back.

I usually like movies with strong central characters (re: heroes), and was considering seeing it. If you want to get an idea of what the movie's like, IMDB has the first 10 minutes of the movie available. None of that occurs on Mars though, so it may not be that indicative of the overall movie.

From the reviews, you're pretty lucky that he's infatuated with this movie and not some other piece of shit action movie like Real Steel or something equally terrible.

Meh, not really all that interested in it. Just read a review for Silent House that has me kind of excited, so I think I may see that instead.

Probably would not see that, other than my useless opinion, I don't know anything about it, sorry.

I'll have to check that out. Looks like the same director as Open Water which I enjoyed. Was along the same lines as Frozen which I liked as well. Don't think I'll get to see it in the theater, but it'll definitely go on the netflix queue.

I liked Frozen more than Open Water. Even though it was kind of ridiculous, the premise worked for me. I hear Silent House is a bit of a slow burn, so is probably not for everyone, but I love that kind of horror.

FRIDAY 8:30 AM: It looks like the moviegoing public is going to bury this 3D sci-fi turkey just as everyone thought. So don’t expect any eulogies from me. Even Disney is saying “it’s going to be a miracle” if John Carter‘s domestic opening box office this weekend has a ’3′ in front of it. The studio is expecting only $24M-$30M despite a whopping budget of $250M, and this start of $500K midnights is weak considering that cost. Rival studios tell me that foreign numbers are starting out soft as well. Disney is uncharacteristically mum despite planning a gigantic worldwide day-and-date push for John Carter with all the frills no matter how dismal its prospects look. All in, this could mean a $100M writeoff for the Walt Disney Co. Box office for this bomb is making rival studios just a little too gleeful considering that probably 1,000 of their Hollywood brethren were gainfully employed during a dismal economy. So if ever a movie needed an autopsy report, this is the one. My dissection will post this afternoon. Watch for it.

Yeah I saw it was originally trending around 20 million for the weekend and they bumped it closer to 30, but wow, could be an epic fail. We'll see how it does overseas though.

UPDATE 8:50 AM: Disney just told me that John Carter has made $13M so far overseas with the biggest news from 3D sci-fi-loving Russia where the movie had the highest opening day in history with $6.5M. The studio is reporting solid starts in Asian markets. But rival studios are warning me of soft starts in Europe.

I don't understand what drives(or doesn't) people to these movies. Gotta be the advertising, which I guess wasn't done too well with John Carter. They should have pretended it was a comic book...
