wow so much fail in this thread with hardly any love for halloween.

halloween > * by far.

that movie is so awesome still to this day. one of the best usage of sound effects in a movie ever, especially for it's time. that piano musical score is the best music in a horror movie ever.

Prince of Darkness gets a nod for creepy religious horror.

A very underrated movie. I didn't expect much when I went to see it but I enjoyed it.

Another Carpenter movie, like The Thing, that didn't get raves or make a ton of money when it came out, but grew in appreciation over time.

If The Thing came out now it would get great reviews and people would swarm to see it.

I love The Thing (all male cast interestingly, and I think it benefited from that! which is not to say I'd want very many movies to do that, but I doubt you could even get one green lit nowadays)

and I love "They Live" - and did he do Escape from New York too? That was good.

I know you gentlemen have been through a lot, but when you find the time, I'd rather not spend the rest of this winter TIED TO THIS FUCKING COUCH!

one of my most favorite movies ever.

also, where is Childs? every time i see him post i think of this movie.

Childs. Childs, chariots of the gods, man.

with that said, i was pretty disappointed when i saw ghosts of mars. maybe i need to watch it again.

He has quite an awesome body of work:

They Live
Big Trouble in Little China
Starman
Christine
The Thing
Escape from New York
Halloween
Assault on Precinct 13
Dark Star

These are all those movies that make you stop flipping channels.

So, at the end of The Thing were either of them a Thing and was the booze a way to infect the other guy?

If you have not listened to Russell and Carpenter on the commentary for The Thing, you should. It's fun; they talk about his hat a lot.

The perfect setup for a sequel and they wait almost thirty years and bring out a piece of crap.

I wish someone would ignore the 2011 version and make a real sequel to the Carptenter Thing. Even Jar Jar Lensflare would do.

Except it wasn't a sequel.

And I L-O-V-E-D the ending.

I like Carpenters films a lot, They Live has to be my favourite with The Thing a very close second. Then again Kurt Russel is one of my favourite actors...

Pre-quel right? I'm gonna have to do a rewatch but I wasn't a fan of the CGI, I much preferred the practical effects of Carpenters.

I found it as intense as Carpenter's The Thing, which makes it good enough for me.

And, again, I really loved the ending.

While watching the newer The Thing, I kept waiting for Mary Elizabeth Winstead to break down the fourth wall and say,

"Why does this keep happening to our family?"

So, I went and watched the last 20 minutes. They carried thru the same effects from the Carpenter version and did it well. I guess because I didn't care for the characters it just left me flat.

I did like how they made it into a prequel at the end, perfectly setting up the Carpenter version

A shout out to a director that is far under appreciated.

Re-watching the Ghosts of Mars. Despite not being his best effort the film holds up well over time. Which is something that can be said of many of his films. Even today The Thing and Big Trouble in Little China, two movies that got no respect when released, are completely watchable. Ten years after Star Wars the idiotic dialogue puts off rewatching, but The Fog still is a good watch.

Ghost of Mars is basically a remake of his earlier movie Assault on Precinct 13, which was pretty good considering when it was made. You could always count on Carpenter to make a good movie...until Escape from LA.
