John Carmack and me...

John Carmack makes me want to scream with his daunting talk on his code for the new DOOM. Someone help me out. My psychologist left me two weeks ago and I have noone to strengthen my grip on sanity. I want to be as intelligent as John in games but I can't see that happening. I know he isn't magical since he's had expierence way back from the 80's and 90's but I can't even tell he's speaking English at times! I'm doing good in math but still I can't understand what he's talking about. He discourages me beyond belief! He makes me feel like nothing since he can just put his head up to a book and absorb all the knowledge in it. I try as hard as I can but I get nothing out of anything.

As far as programming goes, I'm a kind of an amateur. I know classes, functions, variables, overloading-functions, passing and returning, but absolutely nothing about graphics. If I did know the slightest thing on graphics, I'd be at my computer 24/7. From my previous boards you have seen that I am a hardcore gamer and do nearly nothing besides them. I feel selfish talking about myself so much but this problem is prolonging and has yet to be solved.

One thing that you guys may be able to help me with is finding a book that describes the way computers work. Such as the way the electrons or electricity flows through them. Like how John said in one of his interviews how to get all the graphics or something on the GPU instead of the CPU. (Way off so just check out the interviews at http://gamespot.com/gamespot/filters/products/media/0,11100,469881,00.html ) Are there any books out there that can describe a majority of the basics he is talking about such as the triangles and polygon use? I have yet to make a single line in C++ which sounds extremely pathetic. I need a lot of help with this guys or I'm going to be at the local psychiatric ward!

If you guys knew me you'd probably say that I was better off dead. I don't consider myself intelligent at all. I'm impure and evil in my own way. I just don't know what to do. I've thought of becoming just an artist for a game company but that was shot down by seeing everyone else's art and the fact that I suck at art. Programming is for the really smart people which I clearly am not. My stories are nothing but philosophies that are redundant and unoriginal in their nature. I have absolutely no innovation in the world and I am destined for failure. I try hard in school but I get nothing out of it but becoming a conformist and an everyday teenager. I have noone to talk to and I believe I am edging total self-destruction. My guidance counselors think I'm looney and my parents couldn't care less about me. My friends are all leaving me because of my constant talk of failure and sadness. I'm starting to wonder why I'm not addicted to drugs or alcohol. Computers are the only thing, the only thing I am decent at. I'm not even going to bring up chicks because it'd be irrelevant and pitiful.

Please, someone help me from losing my sanity.

Whoa there cowboy, take it easy. :)

Sounds like you need to find yourself and your sense of direction/purpose in life. Take some time and think things through. Writing down thoughts and feelings can help. Exercise, regular balanced meals, and even meditation can do wonders.

Nobody is perfect, everyone has good and bad traits. You seem to be focusing on your bad traits and your frustrations in life. See if you can come up with some of the positives (they do exist). :)

You might start by trying to clarify your thoughts and feelings.

hey d00d! ;) I've been there. and I'd like to tell ya that it gets better... oh wait... IT DOES! :D hehehe, if you're really that far down in the dumps...man, it can't get any worse right? :D bleh...I know how ppl HATE to hear that crap... :D anyway, the fact that your friends are leaving you is probably an indicator that your personality needs to change. Don't you think? d00d...don't be so friggin' negative and down on yourself.

The fact that you're good @ computers...see, there's light. GO TOWARDS THE LIGHT! ;) I did. It sounds to me like U are willing to werk hard, so get into computers, work hard, and you're going to do fine!

God Bless

Dude! It's ok! You're a teenager, lots of us felt the same way you do right now. I'm only 18. I have NO idea what I want to do in the future. But it doesn't matter, I have time! Lots of it! Sure I've got bad traits, but some good ones too. All you need is to stick with it, use your computer, learn. Just don't give up. You've got a long life ahead of you if you make the right decisions.

If you're interested in programming games, check out Windows Game Programming for Dummies. It's an excellent starter book which goes into a good bit of detail about programming 3d video and sound for gaming applications. It focuses mainly on DirectX, where Carmak generally writes C and uses OpenGL, but it should help expand your understanding behind the theory of programming games. I'm sure Amazon would have it.

And don't worry about being the best there is. You're young. You aren't expected to have all the answers yet. That's what growing up is for. Loosen up, stop worrying so much, and enjoy the ride. Your high school days should be some of the best years of your life.

He doesn't have a girlfriend, he has a wife, Anna Kang Carmack I believe. I think you may be thinking of John Romero's girlfriend which is Stevie "Killcreek" Case. The coolest girl in my book.

whoa there.

So you wanna be the next carmack, well I wannt be the next einstein.

You need lots and lots of math in order to even try programming 3D games. My friend started making rotatin cubes and other simple shapes only after taking OAC Algebra and Geometry, which is like AP courses in the US.

Well I know that I need to know a lot of linear algebra and geometry. I'm superior at algebra but I could be better at geometry. (Stupid lines) I'm going to try and pull a 180 again and I get back to tell you guys how everythings doing. Thanks again, id Nut

Try gamedev.net for your game programming needs. They have tons and tons of articles about anything and everything game related. If you want to do 3D graphic, you need to know linear algebra. Scroll through the latest news on the front page cause there's a link to a linear algebra online book (and a forum to discuss the book).

I think joining the Army would be an excellent idea.

I'm not going to go that far, but don't get me wrong, I've thought of it. Even before September 11th, I was and still am a die-hard patriot. I think I can do more for this country brain wise rather than something like the army.

If you want a readable book on elementary computer architecture (working from the ground up), pick up Charles Petzold's Code. It's not a geek book; it's actually a mainstream read.

Charles Petzold is almost legendary for his Winblows programming books. I don't recommend many Mickeysoft Press books, so this one has to be a stand-out. :p

As for the psycho-babble, read some Dilbert cartoons. Then you'll begin to realize how stupid many people really are, even many so called IT professionals who couldn't find their way out of a CLI shell.

Just a thought, but...there are many other professions, even computer professions that are nothing like game development. Open up your options a bit more so you can find your real niche if game programming isn't it. I've been trying new things for years and while I can get decent at a lot of things, I never get truly good...not discouraged yet though.

becoming a game programmer takes alot of work, but not as much as you think. This summer I worked for Cyan Worlds Inc (myst, riven) and they had guys there with only a few years experience. These were guys who were working on the game engine and programming lights and stuff. It was very impressive, but they all told me it was not that hard and after about 12 monthes working with the code, you become very very good at it.
