John Ashcroft.... Do you hate him or love him?

BSides

🙁 Does anyone think that John Ashcroft has used his new powers to beat down the masses in America? Does smokin weed make me a terrorist against the US Government???? I think not!!!!

flame away

I don't think we're allowed to criticize him.

If I were, I'd say that he's obviously a hypocrite for the way he handled the Oregon assisted death issue.

I think he has tried to push his authority beyond Constitutional limits. As BDawg noted, his actions regarding Oregon's "Death With Dignity" law are a clear example where he pushed his own moral agenda at the expense of the rights of the citizens of Oregon.

Smoking pot doesn't make you a terrorist, but IMHO, trafficking in heroin does for two reasons. First, opium derivatives were a major cash source for the Taliban in Afghanistan and the repressive regime of Myanmar. Second, heroin addiction is a tragedy in anyone's life, and anything that promotes it, especially for profit, is both a major crime and a continuing source of serious societal problems, here and in other countries.

I loathe him :disgust:

Anybody that doesn't believe in dancing...... come on the guy is a neanderthal

he was a member of the Senate Barbershop Quartet before he got outvoted by that dead guy's wife. Was that lame or what. Turned out to be good for him, since he's now MUCH more powerful than if he'd remained as a Senator.

I like Ashcroft because he's tough. He's the guy who dishes out justice for the President, and he needs to be tough. And for the current situation, he is NOT pushing his power beyond the constitution. He testified before congress 2 weeks ago, and made his case, and the congress, even the democrats, didn't have a problem with him.

Compared to Janet Reno, I'll take ball busting Ashcroft any day of the week, and twice on Sunday.

I bet Jungle Janet is bigger, stronger, and more of a man than Ashcroft!

I had a friend who interned with Ashcroft a few years ago...I'll have to get some stories.

Most Republicans just don't get it :disgust:

'Just say no' is a joke to anyone who has half a brain.

Alcohol is a lot more harmful than many illegal drugs
(let's all pray w doesn't fall off the wagon)

Trying to lump all illegal drugs together is moronic

<< what was the oregon thing about? >>

Doctor assisted suicide.

It was allowed by Oregon law and had gone through all the legal system there and the majority of the public supported it and then comes Ashcroft and says no.

I find it highly ironic that you blame Republicans for WOD policy, when Democrats are just as guilty of perpetuating it.

In fact, during the Clinton Admin, McCaffey was spending new record amounts on the failed WOD, and Clinton did nothing to change WOD policy for the better.

Please, let's try a LITTLE objectivity, please?

likes: strong, uncomprising person, completely pro-life, moral/social conservative, can't be bought
dislikes: bigoted towards Catholics (he's a Seventh Day Adventist, its almost a requirement), pushes anti-terrorism to the brink of facism, trading national freedom for national security, over-eagerness to use the death penalty...

all in all, its not as easy as saying i hate him or love him...do i think he's a good AG? yes...with some reservations. Do i think he is a perfect human being? who is?

AmusedOne: very true, blaming Repubs is pointless.

But this war on terrorism gives them the green light on passing subjective legislation.

And with Clinton/Gore/Reno's track record on privacy, I doubt they'd be doing much different.

I agree that some of the things being proposed/done have the potential for abuse. But since we're in an emergency situation, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and not complain until/if they abuse these new war time powers. And I'll fully expect them to be retracted after we win significant gains in this conflict both at home, and abroad.

love em!

I went to an Anderson Consulting info session, and they had a trivia give away --

the ques they asked was who John Ashcroft was, and i answered first!

I got a free cd case, and a $15 GC to www.wherehouse.com!

woot woot!

I don't think he's THAT bad. It's not like he's rounding up hundreds of thousands of people and throwing them into internment camps. I guess people just prefer a Justice Department that doesn't enforce the laws because laws suck, right?

I will never give the government the benefit of the doubt. Thats what they want.
And I HIGHLY disagree that they will retract ANY legislation passed.

It seems most of it is to just get their foot in the door on monitoring all of our communications. And that will NEVER stop, mark my words.
