Johan de Nysschen: Chevy Volt Is a "Car for Idiots"

Fuck Audi and their shitty reliability. I would never buy an Audi even if I could afford it. Uppity asshole. They can shove their electrical problems up their collective German asses.

Why doesn't GM just brand the volt as a Cadillac? Just throw some lame luxury crap in it and it'll be a luxury car.

1) because it would increase the price of the car. my guess is, despite cadillac's major progress, they don't have enough pull right now to justify the cost it would incur. in addition, GM wants/needs something on a more mass-produced scale. luxury cars don't sell nearly as many units

2) the ConverJ is being considered for production, i think.

whether he's right or not is immaterial. That is a terrible thing to say. In what way does it make his company look better? If anything it makes it look neutral or worse; it doesn't help audi's image to be condemning another company's product in such a way. It could potentially turn off people who like the volt from audi products. I don't see the point to his statements. I don't know what vw has elsewhere but in north america they have no hybrid product, whereas pretty much all of their major competition does or will very soon (or at least have electric, like nissan). And over time this market is growing and most pundits think it will take an increasingly larger piece of the pie.

I think the volt specifically has major hurdles to overcome. I hope it's not a pie in the face of GM, but it's an uphill battle with that car when it launches.

I couldn't agree more. Bad mouthing another companies product never comes off well... no matter how right you may be. I don't particularly agree with him in this case with regard to his statement... but I definitely disagree on stating it in the first place.

Sorry, but we are all going to help people buy the Volt through our tax money. This admin is going to play up the Volt and it's tax credit like it was the Second Coming of Christ...it will be the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Regardless of how good it is or if it makes any sense to buy it. You are going to pay for people to own it. Just like you just did for all those F-150's and Silverado's purchased under CARS.

A Cadillac version has been there all along...it looks terrific, imo. It's going to help subsidize the cheaper Chevy version.

Yes, like CARS in the sense that my tax money will pay for someone else to buy a car.

Likely someone that make way more money than I do.

A $7,500 tax credit per car is nearly what you get as a first time home buyer.

For a car...a car that really isn't much in terms of technology or fuel efficiency...

Huh? The Volt isn't much in terms of tech and fuel efficiency? It's automotive equivalent of a moonshot.

An electric powered car with an onboard generator is a moon shot?

It's decades old Locomotive technology with a short range battery pack added.

The Prius must be a Jupiter shot then...

The Leaf must be out to Neptune...

Keep in mind that the Volt must be plugged in to fully recharge it's battery pack.

The on board generator will not fully recharge the pack, it will only keep it at a minimum safe charge level until the vehicle can be plugged in to recharge the battery.

Regen braking will provide some small charge back to the battery.

From the Chevrolet Volt official site:

The engine-generator has the capability to provide the level of electrical power that the Volt needs for the most frequent maneuvers. However, the battery will continue to generate some power and work together with the engine-generator to provide peak performance when it's required, such as driving up a steep incline or for high acceleration maneuvers. The engine-generator will then continue to provide electricity to power the vehicle and simultaneously return some energy to the battery to replenish and maintain a low energy level. The battery will not be recharged to a ?full? state by the engine-generator.

Once the pack reaches it's set depletion level, it stays there until you plug the Volt in somewhere.

It has enough juice at that point to give you some occasional limited additional power for acceleration, but basically once the pack is depleted, you are dragging around a heavy depleted battery back until you plug the Volt in.

Google has some vague images of a "cadillac volt" but it seems very early in consideration if at all, presumably a long way off after the chevy. Is that correct?

Interesting because a lot of people already pay $$$ for the name of Audi...

Why would I pay a huge premium for the A4 over a Jetta.....oh wait, maybe because I am getting something the Jetta didn't have? Same for the Volt...it will be bleeding edge, like it or not...

Price has a value of its own. It creates exclusivity.

And just how many of these people are there? Once the "look at me" crowd has one where are the sales going to come from?

Look at the hybrid drivers.

Some of the hybrid cars actually function as they are supposed too. However I do agree that the Volt is a form over function car. The EV range is terrible, the cost is too high, ICE mode isn't efficient enough. I'm not going to complain about size though as it looks to be about the same as most mid sized sedans.

Well yea they function but you can get a comparably equipped car for much cheaper and not have to wait 5+ years to make up the difference which is the point that Audi guy is tring to make.

(referencing the bolded part)... Isn't this the story of EVERY hybrid. I've always read that gas would have to go up to $7+ per gallon to break even on any modern hybrid vehicle vs. cars of similar size from the same manufacturer within 4 years.

Most of the hybrid owners that I know, including myself, didn't buy them to save money, we bought them to use less gas thereby reducing our dependence on foreign oil.

stupid people and their stupid bubble cars.

my $40k would go towards a 3/4 ton powerstroke Ford truck. 🙂

I think you already know the answer to that.
