Jogging vs spinning

I've been transitioning from jogging to indoor cycling the past 2 months. I enjoy cycling and I go on avg 15 miles per workout. I just wonder what are the advantages/disadvantages of indoor cycling vs jogging?

jogging pounds the body

spinning a lot less impact.

Make sure you adjust your your riding position also. You can get knee problems from riding in a position that is not comfy/ optimal for you as well.

Koing

There's a difference between "indoor cycling" and "spinning". I do the indoor cycling thing with my road bike mounted on a fluid trainer. It supposed to simulate actually riding outdoors.

Spinning is done mainly on spin specific bikes with heavy flywheels. Spinning is typically done in high intensity intervals as opposed to indoor cycling which, again is meant to simulate a ride on the road. Of course you can do spinning type workouts, actually intervals on an bike mounted on a trainer. But with fluid trainers the faster you go the more resistance there is so your "spinning" somewhat limited.

I used to run quite a bit until I hurt my knee. Based on my fluid trainer, riding at about 18-20 mph is about the same as it was for me running at about 7-7:45/min/mile pace.

Riding is MUCH easier on the knees.

Cardio wise they're both good. The advantage running has is that it works the support muscles a bit better (with the obvious disadvantage in the knees). Cycling is a very planar motion, so you'll want to incorporate some lateral off the bike exercises to balance your development if you work out a lot.

Do you have a particular goal in mind besides general fitness?

I would like to maintain my weight and gain muscle at the same time. I workout with weights on one day and do cardio the next day. I just want to stay relatively fit while maintaining (or gain) strength and keep my heart in top shape. It's like a habit, I must have at least 3x45 min cardio workout per week, it helps me feel better :awe:

I lost 43~ lbs since feb 2010 (now 181 lb, 5'10"). I still got a love handle to get rid off but it's gonna take a whole lot of work lol !

It's awesome that you lost so much weight already! One thing you might consider is doing some lower body work with the weights before spinning once a week. It might help you go through the easier to get at energy and burn more fat in the spinning. Done with a solid amount of weight it also helps recruit more muscle fibers for the spinning part.

You could also have a longer spinning session to spend more time using fat as a fuel source, but hour+ long indoor spinning can be tedious and kill motivation.

I did 3000 m rowing (15 min) and 45 mins of spinning yesterday. It felt great :awe:

I used to do alot of running, now I mostly just row 6700m 30 minutes, it seems to be much easier on my knees and I can row everyday. Sorry to derail your thread.
