India started with call centers and picking up commodity work. Imagine if, rather than offshoring that work, someone had the vision and leadership to direct that investment into communities dependent on dying legacy industries. Not everyone can or should be a coder, but I imagine coal miners have other transferable skills we could repurpose.

I doubt you can match Indian call centre rates on shore.

If they thought being told they could learn to code was condescending, I hate to think what their reaction would to be someone suggesting they work in call centers.

Which isn't to argue with the idea that there's *got* to be a way to do something other than telling comforting lies while assuring folks that the country doesn't intend to just leave them behind.

For all that, you don't understand that you're one of the shooters in the circular firing squad. The liberals have an attitude and an approach that guarantees failure. You fellows couldn't sell twenty dollar bills for five bucks each.

Trump didn't win the election in 16, the democrats lost it, and now Biden is adopting some of that losing strategy.

Thanks for your opinion, again. I'm am independent that didn't go hard right with the GOP, so guess I'm a democrat now. A nice opportunity to ignore the popular vote again. It's seems those 20 bills are worth every penny. Now you can fall back to "each candidate knows the rules" and how the EC means whatever blah blah blah.

Last I checked, Biden isn't the dnc nominee yet. I wouldn't mind at all if the DNC didn't nominate another legacy politician. Chew on that.

Making options available isn't telling them they HAVE to do that type of work.

They voted to be left behind. They'll likely do it again.

It is extremely difficult to save people from their own willful self destruction.

When has the popular vote been ignored?

To their detriment Democrats are not willing to hawk fake $20s as real. Lying has it's advantages, I guess.

I agree, telling them to "just" replace their job like a pair of pants is incredibly hostile and condescending. Truth in a bad way. Because if those workers could do it, they already would have. No one chooses to die of black lung. Might as well tell them to learn a foreign language, or go to the moon. They might as well be Natives and us telling them "glory and fortune awaits on the other side of the trail of tears". That is how they view their prospect in life, and how they feel about this sort of suggestion. No hope, no belief, no understanding. All they got left are sweet sweet lies about the "good old days". And that won't last either.

BTW, learning and adapting is a child's game. No, seriously, the older we get the more our brains resist new information. Re-training would only work for a portion of the population. We need a solution for ALL people.

As for the... "way to do something" and... "don't leave them behind", I'd call that solution Basic Income. If we secure both base necessities and roofs over people's heads, then !@#$ the jobs market. It can do whatever it wants, the safety net will (can and should) deal with the fallout. Economic and Housing security for our entire population is how we deal with the evolution of Capitalism and how we leave no American behind.

We can readily protect our people and give them hope for a better future. The difficult part is choosing to do it.

You just did. Claiming Democrats couldn't sell 20's for $5. Millions more vote for Democrats.

Going with your analogy, the GOP is certainly a party of hucksters and grifters. Dressing up garbage as treasure, and then lying....claiming the Democrats are culpable of any number of things relating to the garbage.

Still, more people buy the Democrats wares on a regular basis.

Yeah, you're not going to get a lot of votes from coal miners by being honest and telling them that they aren't going to qualify for any jobs better than a fry cook or a Walmart cashier without a bunch of additional training, even if it's an honest assessment.

So its better to lie to them and tell them that coal is going to make a glorious comeback? We complain about a lack of "leadership" in this country but whenever someone tries to do it we shit all over them for it and criticize them for telling the truth.

"tell us like it is unless you're talking about us then treat us like snowflakes!"

Exactly, which is why they should be ignored publicly but have policy solutions available to those that need it and are willing to accept help. As you can see, righties and “both sides” bitches, are going to shit on anyone not on their team no matter what solution democrats offer up. When they inevitably ask what democrats are going to do for these people democrats can simply respond, “we’ll continue with the current republican policy”.

'Tell it like it is' is pretty much a euphemism for 'shares my racist sterotypes against minorities.'
It literally comes from the idea that the average poor outcomes for minorities is proof that those minorities are inferior.

Its a sad day when honesty is considered a losing strategy. Its an even sadder day when instead of being upset by that you and other posters here are concerned that one side is being honest instead of lying.

If you want to know what is wrong with America look in the mirror.

What I'm getting from this is that righties really value sending "thoughts and prayers" over any actual solutions.

Coal is dead, only a fool believes otherwise.
Trump hasn't done shit for miners other than talk.

Biden is right that these areas need new industries, but saying learn to code wasn't very politically savvy.

Ds do need better appeals than this tho in order to sell it. What about that big infrastructure plan Trump did nothing with?

I'd like to see them push a big investment plan to build up these areas so that they can actually build and attract new jobs and let the free market figure out what they are, plus construction jobs are good jobs now.

Giving them UBI won't fix they shitty schools, roads and network service.
Money would just end up in the pocket of an opiod dealer.

More fake news

Unfortunately the average trumper including the OP does not want any body with more than 2 brain cells tell them that they have to move with society. I think this will go beyond coal miners and end up being some ignorant sticking point like the South Park episode where people come from the future and “took yer jobs”

Hyperloops? Elon Musk is a loudmouth idiot. He may have a good idea every now and again, but a lot of his ideas, like the hyperloop, are just stupid nonsense that distracts from already available solutions.
